Actually the version being used

calibre, version 4.99.4

is an interim "test" version for the calibre port to Python 3. The problem is that many packagers try to follow rules for a given distribution and don't follow all of Kovid's guidelines for supported versions.

Everything seems to work fine, at least for now.

Version 4.99.4 is one of the Python 3 betas. Install the 4.14 version and try again.

I was about to ask if there was a way to track new releases with binary installation, and then I was notified about it by Calibre itself. Cool enough! :-)

New version just uploaded, introducing Python 3 compatibility. This version loads in both the released Python2 calibre and the beta Python 3 calibre. It should even function, but it's possible there's code paths not fully exercised.

When I plugged my Kobo Touch A in this morning, everything was fine. But then I installed the new version of the extended driver (and the KEPUB output plugin, too), and now I receive this error:

Those errors are identical to the one @Svens was having last month. It appears to be related to a change in Windows with how Unicode is handled. He described the workaround here.

Working on a fix for that now, but I may need a bit just because of life. I'll post an updated package here for testing before publishing an update, in case anyone doesn't want to enable UTF-8 by default in Windows. I forgot all about Python 2 being dumb with non-ASCII characters in Windows…

Yes, it is not possible to get an older version of any plugin.

As for my enhancement request, Kovid Goyal answered: "This is not worth the effort for me personally. If some one else wants to implement it, I will be happy to supply any needed guidance. If so, re-open the ticket and we can discuss it. status wontfix"
For the specific plugin we are discussing, it should be fixed quickly, so no problem.
