Mmm... it seems to be a PC (or large PDA) with color e-ink.

DB, you already have the 700 in Japan. Seems like it should be easy to recoup your money by selling it locally to buyers who don't want the hassle of shipping and customes. Then use the cash as a starter for getting the new one.

My thoughts exactly! You clever girl! I'm going to look into that right away. I'm thinking of going to see the Fujitsu tomorrow , (DH found where I can go and see it) as the place seems to be closed Sat and Sun and public holidays, and Friday is a public holiday here....
Don't think I could last the weekend...

Here's an article on Wired.com: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2009/0...-first-co.html

I think it means that practical color e-readers are coming. I'm not sure this is it, given the price, but that's just a matter of time. In two years these will be the price of the current Kindle, I predict.

This device, for me, is entirely too slow and too expensive. I will wait for the tech to get better and cheaper before even thinking about a color capable device.

Does this device have at least a monochrome mode that is faster?

A quote from the article:

"It looks like the age of the e-book is finally upon us, the dream of every science fiction writer ever. Next up — flying cars."

Hey, I am envious

When you see it, let us know if the screen has comparable contrast to a grayscale ereader (better/worse than the 505, or the 700?)

I agree, I love books as much as everyone here, but at that price I'd prefer to read them on my laptop! I can see why a lot of people are excited, its definitely is a step toward flying cars; but I rather wait till they fix any bugs if any; aka wait for my reader to die.

=)

P.s. Am I the only one put off by how big it is? It just a tad smaller than those tablet pc's! I like the novel sized readers...

It doesnt support any popular format, except existing japanese mobile formats xmdf and book; it has windows CE..linux would make it much more interesting; and its not internationalized.
This may still be a curio piece not mainstream just yet.

As soon as something new comes out why does everyone post on what it doesn't do? Colour readers are definitely wanted and coming, just because the first one is slow or doesn't have mobi is not a reason to complain.
Let us celebrate the small beginning.
