Starbucks is too expensive to only spend $2.

Depends on what you order. A grande brewed coffee is in that price range (well, $2.10 plus GST). I very seldom go for the other coffee variants given that most of them feature enough sugar to make my dentist dream about her next sports car.

I'm thinking of getting the Clara. Especially if the new one is color, I have no need for that. I'm hoping for a sale...as soon as I see one, I'm going to order.

I doubt this is the case, but if you're saying I can use my KA1 to get books from Amazon using ADE, then please advise as to what I need to do.
You need to read the post. I explicitly said "Adobe DRM" for a reason. With one exception, it doesn't matter what the source of the books with Adobe DRM is, they can be sideloaded to any Kobo device authorised account to the same Adobe account. If Amazon sold books with Adobe DRM, they will be usable on Kobo devices. But, Amazon does not sell books with Adobe DRM, so you can't.

The exception I mentioned was that one store (don't remember which) used a different method for the encryption key and Kobo, and I don't think anyone else supported that.

There's B&N who tied the decryption key to your credit card number.

LOLWUT? So if you cancel you CC, will the DRM break?

Thanks, David. That process is one reason why I did a happy dance when Kobo began to support Overdrive. Sideloading was a DRM pain. Bypassing that step *would* be very handy in an ereader.

Great suggestion. And making returns with them is easier than with Kobo, if what I’ve read here is still true. (Unless I want those Kobo points Kobo’s offering.)

Thanks for explaining that. It sounds very useful. Is there a list of these ACSM direct stores? I usually just deal with Apple Books, Amazon, and Kobo. Sometimes Baen.

I haven't been experimenting much with this lately (as I haven't been buying many books), but I think there were at least four eBook stores I could use. ebooks.com (you had to go carefully through the menu, it tried to, by default, send me to an Android app, but you can get passed it), Bookland (associated with PocketBook, but very few English books), Feedbooks and (strangely enough), Kobo (I'm not sure if all Kobo books are available in ePub format or not, seems like I read that they weren't, but the ones I tried worked.) Google Books would let me log in and read online, but I couldn't get the download menu to come up (I think the Tolino browser is too far behind the times for Google). It seems like I found another one (or two) I'll have to see if I can dig up my notes. Of course you can also go to stores (or other sites) that don't have Adobe DRM, like Smashwords.

Yes, Pocketbooks are able to handle ASCM files, as well as direct download CARE DRM like the Tolinos.

Probably a pretty decent chance they'll be on sale for Mother's Day.

The store that matches your exception is Barnes & Nobel (B&N).

It's already broken. Since B&N discontinued the desktop app, most people who remove DRM can no longer remove the DRM from B&N.
