There’s ‘faster’, and there’s ‘fast enough’. As I suggested, the average consumer can get ‘fast enough’ and that is not the driving issue.

AFAICT, we’re building this thing for IoT applications, something I have concerns about (privacy, security) and zero interest in having in my home and life generally. And like it or not we are all subsidizing it and subscribed to whatever problems come along with it. It’s not that there cannot be welcome solutions as well, but unintended consequences seem inevitable given the lack of safeguards and oversight.

Will home 5G internet connections truely be "unlimited" (unlimited data and no throtteling)?

Looking at this site, I don't see much of an advantage for "unlimited" phone 5G service:

I think 5G is highly over rated. I seriously doubt it will have the speeds it is claimed by the Big Phone companies. It is rather short range as far as signal goes, so unless they greatly increase the number of towers it won’t be very useful in the suburbs, and rural areas probably won’t have it at all. It can be beneficial, perhaps, in highly populated areas like big cities with a lot of high occupancy apartment towers. But other than that I think it will be a dud. And companies like T-Mobile which has about half the towers of AT&T and Verizon will likely have an even less useful 5G coverage. My LTE T-Mobile coverage is marginal even in the suburbs of Dallas/Fort Worth. Out in the countryside it is pretty bad. I assume their 5G coverage will be pathetic. I also know companies like AT&T and Verizon love to screw over customers when it comes to data usage, so don’t expect to replace your high speed WiFi with 5G.

First of all, I was using humor.

Second, I’m not sure you can select to use a 4 digit passcode rather than a 6 digit one. If so I didn’t notice that option when I set up my mini 5, but it might have been an option which I just glossed over during setup. Older devices like my iPhone 5 still use a 4 digit passcode though. In reality it isn’t that big of a deal since current devices use touch ID or face ID most of the time, if you choose to use them, and entering two more digits really isn’t a big deal anyway if you prefer to enter a passcode. Certainly better than entering a long password with special characters and numbers.

It's an interesting commentary on the security of the biometric options that all of my Android devices require my (9-digit) PIN on bootup, only offering fingerprint ID for apps and unlocking once the devices have been booted up

With iPhones/iPads using face ID or touch ID are both totally optional. Regardless, at least Apple doesn’t mine and sell our data the way Google does, and that is much more of a security issue than passcodes.

Mine arrived yesterday, and is now set up with my “stuff”. I got the 64Gb RED version because although I had 128Gb on the iPhone 7, I didn’t go anywhere near using it all. Mostly under 30GB. Turns out that although theres a slight size difference between the 7 and the SE, the cases for 7 fit it perfectly. I ordered a new Spigen case so I’ll donate the old one to whoever buys my 7.

My comment was platform agnostic, a comment on the state of biometric security, not a criticism of Apple.

Same as with Apple, its a good system. Its more secure than being able to unlock with a fingerprint when first booted. (you’re lying unconscious on the ground and your assailant uses your finger to unlock... lol... not going to happen to most of us, but still..)

Exactly! Biometrics are convenient, but nothing beats a nice randomly-generated 64-chaaracter passphrase

Preferably with a new one being generated each time you unlock the phone.

The most secure computer in the world is one that has been powered down and locked away some place secret, anything less than that is a compromise. Of course, it's the world's most useless computer, but hey that isn't security's problem!

For a number of reasons, I decided that I didn't want to wait for 5G, so I upgraded by iPhone 8 plus to a iPhone 11 Max Pro. I got it yesterday. Copying everything over was a breeze, I just left the old phone and the new phone talking for a while and everything was copied over including content. Apple has really improved the process since the last time I did it. On my iPads, I tend to just set it up as a new device rather than copy.

The exception to that was the Kindle App, which required me to treat it like a new device, i.e. sign in again and re-download everything, going through the whole annoyance of books with device limits. There were only about 20 of the some 2500 or so books, but it was just an extra annoyance since there is no batch download function with the kindle app.

Since I have about twice the storage as my old iPhone, I decided to install Calibre Companion and Marvin. At least with Calibre I can download in batches. It takes some time, but much easier than the Kindle app.

I don't do a lot of reading on my phone, but it is handy to have it there for those times I'm stuck in line or something. Since I mostly read on an iPad with Marvin, it's easy enough to sync and pick up where I left off.

The nice thing is that books copied over and copied all my audiobooks without me doing anything special.

The Kindle app does have a sync option. I use it a lot to download new books and sync the category and position in the books from my iPad to my iPhone.

I know the sync option, but if it automatically downloads any book not already downloaded, then I'm totally missing where that is.
