The 8" one. PB740 according to its About screen. I think it's same as that one that comes in gold/copper except it's black. Not android unless it's under the hood but it has some apps and apparently more can be added? |

The PocketBook ereaders have a custom linux OS on them. It's not android. You can add applications, but they need to be built against the PocketBook SDK to work with the touch screen and buttons. There are builds of koreader and coolreader available for the devices. Third party applications are rare, so you should not expect some kind of android-like market of applications for the devices.

Well, there's a recent post about how it forces "text-align: justify;" regardless of what you put in the CSS or its settings.
There's another one asking how to remove the built in fonts; it comes with a slew of them, all nearly the same, so trying to find an alternative font is a pain in the neck from all of the scrolling. The UI is just klunky, even though it's android. Something about adding books to it and its library was klunky but I can't remember what. I gave up on them and installed koreader, which does make it usable. But having to install a 3rd party reading app is malarkey. Their software just screams "Designed and made in China." One of my biggest complaints is not about Onyx's software but the whole idea of android on a 16 grays e-ink device. Android doesn't know about grayscale and all of the android apps assume the display is at least 256 colors. So you get confusing color combinations that work in color but in 16 grays map to two similar grays making it very hard to see what's what. But we're talking about a color display here so that shouldn't be a problem with this one. Last edited by hobnail; 04-23-2020 at 06:28 PM. |

Color imput must be reduced to 16 shades of greyscale. There is no advantage from Pocketbook. You can read Kindle books - not with Pocketbook. You can install Lending library applications - not with Pocketbook Thank you for showing the disadvantages of Pocketbook |

2) There exist curated-for-eInk app stores, such as Good eReader's, for example. Speaking for myself, I really value being able to install my preferred reading and syncing apps through Android. |

ok, that would have surprised me too. The first color ink display and then at the price of a normal e-book reader. Fake news ![]() |

Nate does a good job of tracing the news / rumors:
https://the-digital-reader.com/2020/...een-with-envy/ It's not just Onyx. But I direct you to his dedicated thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...45#post3980245 |
