There is no "device_drivers_KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED.py.json" file in the Calibre configuration directory. Calibre is portable and running on Windows 10.
The plugin is installed from Calibre this way:
"Open Preferences -> Plugins -> load plugin from file, install and restart calibre."
Is there anything i am not doing correctly?

Did you restart calibre after installing the plugin? This must be done for the plugin to work. If it doesn't, open the configuration, make a change and save it. You can reverse the change later. I can't think of a reason why not having the file would cause a problem. And testing here, I can't reproduce it this way, but, it will at least remove a possibility.

Of course, I restarted Calibrе. I even installed a brand new one (not a portable version). The result is the same.
Even after installing the Kobotouchextended (and restarting Calibre), the Kobotouchextended settings cannot be accessed I'm not even talking about connecting with Kobo.

I am attaching two screenshots after the installation of Кobotouchextended and a Calibre restart, without connecting it to the KAO.

I solved а problem I had with Kobo Touch Extended 3.2.2 add-on.
I've included the "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for wordwide language support" option in "Language for non-Unicode programs" and everything works now.
First, I tried to choose English in "Regional settings" in "Non-Unicode programs", but that didn't work.
In general, if the Windows Display language is EN, there seems to be no problem.

However, I wonder why the problem occurred with the new version, while with version 3.1.5 there were no problems.

Thanks to all of you who engaged in my problem. I also hope my decision would help those of you who are dealing with the same issue.

I'm not surprised that the error also happened when you tried to open the configuration. I was sort of thinking that would happen when I suggested configuring the driver.

I can't think of why this is happening. @PeterT's suggestion about special characters in your username is about the only thing I can think of. But, I also woudn't expect that to be the case for a portable install. But, what directory are you installing calibre to?

I might be able to get a clue from a debug log. Could you run calibre in debug mode, repeat the above and post the log? Debug mode is started by right-clicking on the preferences button and choosing the option. Calibre will restart and display a message about debug mode. Do the above actions and then close calibre. It will then display the debug log. Post that, or PM it to me if your prefer.

Calibre folder is "D:\Calibre"

The debug log when the "Use Unicode UTF-8 for wordwide language support" setting is switched off. This text "calibre �� " was readable in the log, when the beta setting was switched off and it looked like this: "calibre Дебъг регистър", but at the moment, while i am posting this, I have already switched on the option, that's why it is not readable. Looks like a plug-in's problem:

Sorry, I didn't notice this earlier when I posted my request for the debug log.

A lot has changed between calibre 3.1 and 4.13. The version of Qt has been updated and there are a lot of changes to prepare for moving to Python 3. Somewhere in that is probably what is happening. As the error is related to unicode, that it works when that option is on makes sense.

This probably means that one of the options in the driver is not correctly initialised for unicode. I'll have to work out which, as while you are seeing this in extended driver, it might be in the built-in KoboTouch driver.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help me work out which option is at fault. Could you try again with the unicode option off, but this time connect the device? That goes through more of my code and shows more details. Hopefully it will help.

Have you considered installing the official calibre version from the calibre website as opposed to the version from your dustribution's repository?

I generally prefer using debs and the occasional snap, when using Ubuntu, but I must admit, this solved my issue. :-D

Everything seems to work fine, at least for now.

Me too, but calibre updates very quickly, and the version in the ubuntu distro was several *years* old last I looked.

I've included the "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for wordwide language support" option in "Language for non-Unicode programs" and everything works now. First, I tried to choose English in "Regional settings" in "Non-Unicode programs", but that didn't work. In general, if the Windows Display language is EN, there seems to be no problem. However, I wonder why the problem occurred with the new version, while with version 3.1.5 there were no problems. Thanks to all of you who engaged in my problem. I also hope my decision would help those of you who are dealing with the same issue. Attached Thumbnails
