Customers have been getting really annooyed that we cancelled our twice a week consulting hour until further notice. With the 5 feet social distancing rules our store just isn't big enough for it. We allow 2 customers at the same time in the store and during consulting hour there are usually multiple people waiting. Also our counter is only 2 meters long. It's impossible to help two customer at the same time and for them to keep 5 feet apart. So we wouldn't be able to work on a consulting hour item and help a regular customer at the same time, like we normally do.

It looks like we're going to have to deal in a "5 feet society" for a while yet. I've made cards with the name of a collegue who repairs most types of light fixtures. People will have to pay for it, but at least they can get it done. We don't have the space and time to take in repairs, even if it's quiet in the store. Also my father doesn't feel like having to deal with the hassle of repairs that goes with it (impatient customers mostly).

I've had several customers trying to convice us to look at whatever they brought, because it's only "something small". People don't realise that even simple thing can take some time to fix. And at this time we want people to stay in the store as short a time as possible. The opposite of what we normally want.

Ask them if they can fix the small item them self. If not, then it isn't "small".

My daughter is considered 'essential' because she runs an optical lab. I'm extremely near sighted myself, but enough is enough. She is the manager and they have furloughed her employees and she's the only one working. Hubby and I are trading off weeks with other grandparents taking care of the 7 month old so they don't have to worry about day care and illness. Then daughter and I both get sick. I isolated myself in a tiny little bedroom in their apartment for 2 nights before we came home. Turns out we both have bronchitis, and just passed that I ran fever until Sunday night, when hubby went back Sunday morning. I've missed a week of my husband and by grandbaby! But I would do it again so I don't get her sick. (We can switch off because we are all in education and doing distance learning) Daughter tested negative for Covid-19, I wasn't tested but fever broke and bronchitis meds helping.
Daughter does feel good about working most of the time, especially when medical workers come in the get glasses to replace the contacts they aren't allowed to wear currently.

I went to the eye doctor shortly before all this hit. When my glasses were ready and I went to pick them up, they shoved them out the door at me. The office is now closed for everything except emergencies. I can't wear the new glasses until they get adjusted because they're a little loose and would keep sliding down, so I'm continuing to wear the old damaged ones.

Of course I do understand why they can't adjust my glasses right now as it requires somebody having to be in close proximity. It's just frustrating that I paid a lot of money for something I can't use. This will be one of the first things I take care of if the restrictions ever end.

I checked with a friend who's wife is a pet groomer, he said "Yes, she is still open as she also boards pets and is considered an essential service."

So I can get my puppies' hair cut, but I can't get my own.

A couple our Prime Minister's slogans are "If you are able to go to work, or work from home, then you are an essential worker" and "If you are able to keep your business open and follow the hygiene guidelines then yours is an essential business"

But still a lot of people wanting welfare and a lot of businesses (e.g. airlines) wanting subsidies and bail-outs.

I got a 5-pack of masks at a local retailer for $5. I'm trying to imagine why a similar order from eBay would cost $19, even with shipping.

The local retailer is a hardware store called The Nuthouse, a few blocks from me. They are open 24/7. (With NYC in lockdown, the front door is locked after hours and you buzz to be admitted and served, but they are open for business.) They do a lot of trade with businesses and large buildings, and have a truck constantly busy. If it's a tool, part, or fitting, they have it, in stock, on the shelf. No surprise they are 24/7.

They are my go to supplier for lots of things, like an LED strip light I got to attach to some shelving. The shelving sticks out from the all, and there is an alcove it creates to one side. That alcove if not lit bu the overhead fixture in the room because the shelving gets in the way. T%hat area can now be lit and my SO who needs to see and get to stuff in the alcove is happy.

The presence of such things means NYC on lockdown is mostly an annoyance for the SO and I. Everything we need is available in walking distance. We are mostly homebodies, and the places closed are mostly places we don't ordinarily go to that much anyway. We are lucky and aware of it.

Given the rants you post here, is that an "As much as half?" or "Only half?" question?

And intelligence and sense are separate characteristics that are not always found together. I know lots of theoretically smart people who do quite convincing imitations of stupid.

And unfortunately, needing them.

I saw a post on a mailing list I'm on from an acquaintance who had been laid off after 14 years of service. I blinked in surprise, then recalled that the company he works for as a tech sells and rents lighting and sound gear for events. Events are all on current hold, so hundreds across his company got pink slips. No work for them to do, and their company isn't big and rich enough to keep people on the payroll when there is no money coming in and it's unclear when normalcy will return. I told him to treat it as an enforced vacation, file for unemployment, get around to all the things he was putting off because he was busy working, and expect to be rehired when business resumed. (He was the guy at his location who made sure gear going out worked as designed, and fixed things that didn't. I'm quite certain they'll want him back.)

Airlines are dramatically hard hit. Travel is in the toilet. So are places that do lodging. I was told of a 400 room hotel in San Francisco that is simply closed for the duration.

And lots of folks in "non-essential" occupations have jobs that cant be done from home, with some question about whether their employers will still exist when this is over.
