It depends on what you are testing. The test you are quoting for for viral assay. Functioning, able to reproduce virus. The longer test was looking for RNA on surfaces, not necessarily functioning virus.

Different standards.

Plus temperature makes a big difference. The colder, the longer it remains potent. Apparently above 45-50 C, it denatures.

I have to say that I think that everyone is concerned about how long "Functioning, able to reproduce virus" remains on surfaces.

And what longer test? I've only seen a baseless assertion.

They do have a Porta Pottie on the grounds, but it shouldn't be too difficult to disinfect what is essentially a toilet inside a big plastic box.

.....

I would consider appliance repair businesses, plumbers, electricians, etc., to be essential services in most cases.
That's not the case in the UK now. We're under lockdown. As I mentioned in a previous post, even vets are closed, and I would consider them far more essential.

Also, having electricians, and appliance repair people visiting your home presents a real threat of virus spread. They shouldn't be moving around the community, let alone actually entering people's homes.

As for groups of builders working on empty houses, they are a threat to each other - possibly spreading the virus between them, and a threat to others by travelling to work. They are not wearing protective masks or googles, unlike delivery men. (I've had prescription deliveries, where they were not only well protected, but put the meds outside my front door while I stood in my enclosed porch - he indicated that he wanted me to stay in the porch until he'd left.)

Things have become very tough in the UK in regard to the lockdown. No way would a repair person be prepared to enter our houses; nor would we want them to. And it is not included as one of the exceptions to the "not leaving your house or having contact (physical) with people not in your household" stance taken by the government and being enforced by the police.

For the moment, at least, the builders and decorators are not working on the house next door. I have a feeling that the old man who lived there won't be returning, but will remain with his son. The house will probably be sold.
No house sales are taking place either, and completion dates are having to be postponed for those who were in the process.

That is not the current advice.
In case of emergencies, or where you need maintenance or repairs, tradespeople can still operate and visit your homes:

https://assets.publishing.service.go...others__1_.pdf

Quote:
Work carried out in people’s homes, for example by tradespeople carrying out repairs and maintenance, can continue, provided that the tradesperson is well and has no symptoms. Again, it will be important to ensure that Public Health England guidelines, including maintaining a 2 metre distance from any household occupants, are followed to ensure everyone’s safety.

No work should be carried out in any household which is isolating or where an individual is being shielded, unless it is to remedy a direct risk to the safety of the household, such as emergency plumbing or repairs, and where the tradesperson is willing to do so. In such cases, Public Health England can provide advice to tradespeople and households.

No work should be carried out by a tradesperson who has coronavirus symptoms, however mild.

KEY POINTS
The coronavirus RNA was found on surfaces of the Princess Cruise ship up to 17 days after passengers disembarked, new research by the CDC shows.
Researchers looked at the COVID-19 outbreaks on the Carnival-owned Diamond Princess ship in Japan and the Grand Princess ship in California.
The coronavirus’ RNA “was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated.”

Really? So when I watch a show on my phone, using my cell phone's data plan, where is the wire? Or are you talking about the wires on the cell phone antenna that is miles away from me?

RNA is evidence that the virus was there. I'm not sure if it is evidence that the virus that was there can still reproduce, though. The article seemed to be more about raising questions about transmission than giving facts.

And an important correction/clarification at the end of the article:

"Correction: This story was updated to reflect that SARS-CoV-2 RNA, not live virus, was identified on surfaces in cruise ship cabins up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess."

While you may not have a wire, there are wires somewhere in the loop to get the data to your phone.
