Jumping in here.
I thoroughly enjoyed Hubbard's Battlefield Earth. I also enjoyed his Final Blackout (not a chunky book, but a standalone). I read his Mission Earth series though and disliked it, a lot. So maybe try Battlefield Earth and leave it at that? As for Fantasy, Brandon Sanderson has his 10th Anniversary eidition for his Elantris. I read the original back in '06 and really enjoyed it. He added a bunch to the 10th Anniversary Edition, not sure how much though. |

Some of the Pournelle/Niven best sellers have been pretty hefty - Mote in God's Eye, Lucifer's Hammer and Footfall. Lucifer's Hammer was nominated for a Hugo, as was Footfall as was Mote in God's Eye. Hum, maybe it's time to re-read those books. It's been a while.

Try Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. The first book is about 1100 pages or so.
Stormlight Archive 1. The Way of Kings (2010) 2. Words of Radiance (2012) 2.5. Edgedancer (2017) 3. Oathbringer (2017) 4. Rhythm of War (2020) |

It was suprisingly difficult to find stand-alone stories. I didn't realize that so many sci fi and fantasy books I love are parts of a series. Anyway, some of my faves are:
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks Earth by David Brin The Princess Bride by William Goldman Spinning Silver and Uprooted by Naomi Novik (not a series) Shadowdance by Robin Wayne Bailey Anthem by Ayn Rand Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett |

I have a fantasy recommendation
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...8&postcount=40 8 thick books in two series in the same universe. Tarrin Kael's Sennadar Universe by Fel (James Galloway). The books are available for download here http://www.weavespinner.net/worlds_of_fel.htm |

I thought we were supposed to be recommending stand alone books?
The Stormlight Archive is anything but stand alone. There are scheduled to be 10 books, only 3 of which are published, and then they also are part of his Cosmere universe which incorporates many other books of his. The Weavespinner looks like 8 books across two series. Are they a single continuous story? I doubt it with two series. |

Never fails. Someone says standalone, and you're lucky to get 4 or 5 posts in before people start working series in.

Another recommendation is The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. While it is three books, it was originally meant to be one book. The publisher made it into three books.

I agree. There is, however, this very FAT Sci-Fi title: Stand on Zanzibar - John Brunner Hugo Award for Best Novel [1969] Or one might try: Dhalgren - Samuel R. Delany Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-29-2020 at 10:22 AM. |

The Sheep Looked Up is fat also. My favorite Brunner, though, is The Shockwave Rider, which isn't too fat. One might include Heinlein's I Will Fear No Evil. It's pretty fat. . . Last edited by Greg Anos; 03-29-2020 at 10:25 AM. |

^ I see that now. Thanks.
Have you tried (or can tolerate) Samuel R. Delany's writings? |
