Edge is fine for the occasional user manual or spec sheet. I don't collect any reading material in pdf.
I use Google's free pdf reader on tablets.
Huh? Windows has never reset my custom defaults, ever. I use Sumatra for reading PDFs. Fast and lightweight.

Windows likes to pull the trick of saying there is a problem with a customised " open with " setting so it has reverted to default. i.e. to edge. I may have been using an oldish version of pdfexchange which was triggering it. It also kept giving me similar grief over WinZip until I uninstalled that. I had a paid forbut old version and did not want to pay again for a bunch of irrelevant updates. I was at WinZip 12 and it's probably at v 20 now.
All I had to do was find and change any zipx back to zip then let windows be the default instead.
I have done my best to abandon pdf. It's only when I need to search for a user manual that I need it

I've had PDF XChange as my default PDF handler since it was first released. I only update it occasionally (turned its update notifier off ages ago). Windows has never asked if I want to use Edge, it's there as a option in Open With, along with Google Chrome.

theducks on WinRAR. I tried 7-zip once, it nagged to be the default for everything under the sun so I gave it the flick.

My PC did a Windows 10 update a day or so ago and after that my python was gone. When I ran the python command from the command prompt it brought up a window about getting it from the Microsoft store. I had done a local install of python so it was in my C:\Users directory, when I reinstalled it went back to my old way and installed in in C:\Program Files, which means I need to open an admin command prompt whenever I need to add a package/module.

The last time I installed Python, it installed it in a directory off of the root of my syetm drive.

Both 2.7 and 3.4 are (still there) off the root of my older W10, which just updated to 1909

Maybe your drive has pending issues

I use 7-zip for occasional rar files and Windows Explorer for zip. 7-z has never nagged me for not being the default for zip. Strange.

It was a 15-20 years ago, probably soon after it was released. I got it because someone sent me a .7z file and at the time nothing else could open them. But now WinRAR can unpack them and if I want to make one I use Peazip. Hardly ever see a .7z file these days, I think the novelty wore off.

Odd. I've been using 7-Zip since version 2 back in 1999 and I've never had a nag screen for "everything under the sun". Yes, if I bring up 7-Zip's file manager and go to Tools => Options, I can associate a fair number of extensions with 7-Zip but I've never had that screen show up on it's own after the first time I install 7-Zip on a system.

windows not liking old versions of winzip was a known thing - i googled it at the time.
its been too long for me to remember what windows did not like with my pdf choices
maybe it only changed back to edge with each feature update: 1709, 1803... 1909
for winzip " an app default was reset" is the message i used to see

WinZip versions 17.5 and older were not designed for use on Windows 10, are not fully compatible, and are not recommended. We advise that you upgrade to the latest version of WinZip when installing on Windows 10.

Windows 10 - An app default was reset (older WinZip versions ..

Now I think about it the 'everything under the sun' behaviour might have been 7zip running on OS2 Warp, but pretty sure it was same in Windows NT. The context was an inter-continental project for the forex division of a Japanese investment bank close to the usability testing phase. So, we didn't have time to faff around with some Bostonian dude's cutesy archive utility. IIRC his code was pretty crappy and he was never fully paid.

Bottom line - that put me off 7zip for life.

Ah, OS/2. Fond memories of the OS and running my BBS on it for years.
