That's why I was holding off. Supposedly they're going to release (or "unlock"?) the new features (built into the update) at a later time. Seemed kind of like an odd way to do it.

In the last 24 hours I have had 7 Kindle readers update themselves to firmware 5.12.4. This includes Oasis G9, Voyage, PW3 and Basic units. The software updates page still shows 5.12.3 as the latest download available for all applicable units as of 8:18 PDT. No Aa menu changes noted so far.

Sync unit and leave wifi on and within 5 minutes or so the downloaded update file has arrived. Never seen this mass update before so quick on so many different models.

My non-JB PW3 auto updated to 5.12.4 as well. Only knew because I got the blank Home screen.

Didn't need to deregister to fix, though. Just a simple restart did the trick.

Way to go Amazon. You really botched pulling the 5.12.4. Yes, you pulled it from manual updates, but you left it in place for OTA updates.

Files may be changed/updated as there was a period of several days when units I left on with communications enabled did not update.. Updating restarted sometime yesterday.

The buggy version is still being sent OTA.

MD5 checksum is still the same, afaik, so don't think they changed anything.

It's strange the way they pulled the update from the downloads page while continuing to deliver it online. Does not make sense.

Technically they are no longer in compliance with the licenses for the open source software they use since they also pulled the source code from the download site at the same time.

But surely you can ask them for it, right? Dont most open licenses have a similar clause? You dont necessarily need to provide a general download link but you're also allowed to provide source upon request only?

You are right. I haven't made such a request so I don't know whether or not they would be responsive.

Much like the actual FW, I'm fairly sure the files are still there and not hidden behind a 403, you only have to tweak the URL.

Granted, that's not entirely compliant (especially given the fact that source drops are named after the OTA number, which is slightly more arcane than the version number), but, still ;D.

Almost a month later, and the only feature delivered is empty home screens to a few ‘lucky’ people.

Perhaps they found some bugs that need fixing but are currently understaffed due to the emergency.
