Updates?
I noticed there was a new caliber update, but clicking on it takes me to the download page. the file is huge (100 megabytes) and I feel like I am doing it wrong.

Nope: that is good
Calibre does not do 'patch' type updates, only full installs.

In most cases, you just run the installer and it overwrites the program, leaving all the settings and Library intact. (That said, a fairly recent backup is still a good plan)
On rare occasions, settings have been glitched. But never a Library.
Have problems: Read the FAQ AND ASK HERE. Doing the wrong recovery, can really make a mess out of a simple tweak.

Because not everyone WANTS auto-updates and that also create$ traffic on the servers run by Kovid.

New Device support and new features are why folk need to Update.
The rest is optional.

Plus: Glitches happen. Allowing the knowledgeable folk to find the issues (and report), allow emergency corrections or Fixed in next release (you might want to Pass if this would affect you)

There's no need to install every update. Read what's new and decide if those things are important for you or something you'd like. If not, no need to update.

I usually update every couple of months or so, sometimes more often, sometimes longer than that, depending on the update.

I keep a few past update files in case something goes wrong with the current update. I've never had to go back.

If you 'run from source' you can do incremental updates, instructions are in calibre User Manual Setting up a calibre development environment section.

The FAQ in in the same manual, and there are EPUB, AZW3 and PDF download links at bottom of first page.
