debug plugin for crash adding book to library

I am encountering a problem adding an epub book to my calibre library. I am getting a pop-up:

calibre, version 4.12.0
ERROR: Cannot add books: Failed to add some books, click "Show details" for more information.

Worker process crashed while executing job
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/pool.py", line 108, in recv
  File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/__init__.py", line 23, in eintr_retry_call
EOFError

How can I debug this further? Can I execute this in a linux terminal window with some additional debugging to determine how to correct the problem?

Disable any plugins that automatically run when a new book is added, and retry. That will narrow the scope of your research. Also, check your Auto-Add settings under Preferences > Add Books.

Note that Calibre has built-in plugins for certain specific tasks. You can disable only 3d party plugins.

I know which 3rd party plugin is crashing. The question is how do I correct it? This plugin has worked fine in the past with similar books, so I am puzzled at the problem wth it now.

The maintainer of the plugin appears to be leaving it to me to solve, so I am looking for direction on how to do so.

No one can help you fix a secret plugin error. Since you are intentionally withholding everything that is important, you are on your own.

Also, your post does not belong under Library Management since its cause is a plugin.

My error if I neglected to include necessary information, this is my first such instance of a problem with a plugin. The plugin crashing is DeDRM v6.7.0 and as it is designed to be run by the calibre library management software at a minimum I need to understand how I can debug it. If there are additional debug options that can be used within the calibre einvironment that would be helpful. If there is a way to run it outside of the calibre environment this might be helpful. If there additional debugging tools available that would be helpful.

All that I know from the debug options documented with the plugin is that the crash is occurring at the point of trying the encryption key.

I suggest using the official calibre release for Linux if you are not already doing so.

The calibre software included with various Linux distros can be buggy. Some of them use Python 3 which is not yet supported by many of the calibre plugins.

I am using the official release 4.12 here and after hitting the problem with the installed plugin the latest release of that as well.

Use Windows 10 or Go to the Apprentice Alf blog and ask for help.

I just asked as suggested at Appretice Alf's blog. Only time will tell what response I get there. The only other possible approach I could try at the moment would be to install one of the earlier releases of the plugin to see if that works.

I'm using an older version because it still works. I have no need yet to update.

Yes try one of the earlier releases, but you are getting an EOF error. I would say re-download the epub and try also try other epubs to see if it is only the one that gives the error. I suspect a bad epub or download.

It means you ran out of data while you were parsing you file, it usually means that there is a syntax error in your input which has confused the parser and its has tried to complete a production but eventually hit the end of file. Another possibility is the file is truncated and there is missing data.

OK I just added a recently downloaded drm epub to calibre using the latest tools, worked.

using:
Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia
Kernel: 5.3.0-40-generic x86_64 bits
Cinnamon 4.4.8

I will try an earlier release of the plugin and see what happens. I doubt the book is truncated, as an epub is also a zip file and a zip check returns no errors detected.

Whenever the Python 3 version of the DeDRM plugin is released, it's going to be based on the latest version. So go report it as a problem so it can be fixed.
