I thought I'd sleep in. 'Forgot about daylight savings time... Almost half the day is gone! It's 11:29am!

It takes me at least a week before I can appreciate that side of it. I like the effect, hate the fact that we lost the hour of sleep today.

I really hope this is the last time I need to do this. Our state legislature passed a "year-round day light savings time" bill last year, hopefully the US congress will get off their duffs and let us actually do it.

One advantage to being retired. I didn't lose any sleep, I just woke up later.

I run a group meeting every morning, online, that is tied to the time of day elsewhere, so it means I'm up at 5 each morning during DST (where I am does not observe DST, so, to the view of the rest of the world, we "shift" 2x annually, although it's actually the other way 'round--we do NOT shift, everybody shifts around us).

I rather loathe it for that reason. Getting up an hour earlier, 6 mos out of the year is tedious.

Here in New England they’ve been batting around a similar idea for a few years, and we wouldn’t need congressional approval, either. The proposal is to go on Atlantic Standard Time all year. The wrinkle as I understand it is that you need congress for permanent daylight time, but not permanent standard time. But I could be wrong about the semantics of it and it boils down to the same thing. I’d love it.

Basically we need to get in tune with each other, as there’s a series of cascading conditions in effect. New Hampshire is waiting on Massachusetts, Maine is waiting on NH. Connecticut, for obvious reasons, would presumably opt out. I think the real objection is that sunrise would be awfully late early in January; the kids waiting for buses argument.

That would be eight months, just about. At which point, I think it’s more logical to say that you get up later for four months.

? From March 7th-8th to November 1st, to me, is not exactly four months, last time I checked. During that period, I'm 3 hours behind NYC and the same time zone as California; during Standard Time, I'm 2 hours behind NYC and an hour ahead of Cali.

That means I'm getting up earlier from March-November.

Uh, yeah. That’s eight months, less a week, which is why I said “just about.” So the flip is that you’re getting up later for only four months, plus a week, which is what I said.

Standard Time and Daylight Time are not reciprocal. Daylight Time is nearly twice as long. Your six month figure is way out, no matter whether you choose to focus on earlier or later.

Ditto. I like coming home from work and having it still be light outside. I don't care if it's dark in the morning.

It would be fine with me if we could have year-round daylight savings.

Some of my IRL acquantainces say they don't even care if we have daylight savings or standard time, they wish we could just pick one and stick with it.

This. It's been fairly well proven that the switching is unhealthy. The original reasons behind the switching have also been proven to be unsound.

It had just started being light when I normally get up and now it's back to being dark again

Honestly the advantage of daylight savings time where I live feels fairly minimal, the sun wasn't setting until 6:30 before the time change (we don't follow the *correct* time zone) and by the middle of summer we will be going to bed before full dark and waking up in the light anyways.

Fine. So, let me change my complaint--I'm getting up earlier 8 months out of the year.

Happy now?

Is it really that hard to say, “Oops, I was wrong!”? My original comment was tongue in cheek regarding using the shorter period as your basis of comparison, but then I responded to the snarky “last time I checked.”

And there was always the possibility which it seems you didn’t consider that I was right at that. But since I knew I was right all along, I’m no happier than I was. You’ve been saved from making a similar incorrect comment in the future and foolishly correcting others who got it right, so perhaps you’re the happy one of us?
