Personally, I prefer the higher-quality metal of the Oasis and am glad Amazon did not cheapen it with plastic.

For me, it depends. It is nice to have this solid feeling with the metal, it feels premium and sturdy. My Voyage is also very nice, and I do like the back of it as it is not slippery and not temperature-dependent - I have no problem putting it in my backpack (in the frontpocket) or in my big winterjacket's pocket, without a case.
That said, I did cave and got the Amazon Kindle Waterproof case for the Oasis 3, as I don't like sleeves that much and I prefer to just have a case around it when I read. |

(But my objection to the metal back is not that it seems cheap -- it doesn't. It's the thermal conductivity. I mean, yes, it's mostly fixed with a Fintie skin, but while the result is no longer actually painful, it still doesn't feel as nice as the plastic-and-rubber combo of the original Oasis -- mostly because of the rubber backing on the thicker wedge.) |

My problem with the cold back has been solved with my back cover, but I still think a plastic back would have been better (comfort over sleekness). But I do know lots of people like the Oasis as it is. |

Obviously Amazon should fix this with a runtime configuration option! Just flip the right option and the back flips to metal or rubber/plastic. Easy, right? (... actually, this *is* in theory doable, using quantum-dot-based trickery which can basically produce the electron shells of whatever chemical elements you like without actually needing to bother to drag around the elements themselves, and since these are only electrons floating atop semiconductors it's quite easy to software-control. Downside: right now you need near-absolute-zero conditions and really rather significant amounts of power, and it is really not yet ready for large-scale use.)
