Now we come to the immensely prolific C.J. Cherryh, one of my favourite writers who is still writing. Cherryh has written some difficult books, and some very odd ones, and she’s written a number of series, some of them with loose chronology. I’d suggest starting with either Rimrunners or The Paladin, depending on whether you like science fiction or fantasy. Rimrunners is part of the Union/Alliance series but it’s a standalone self-contained book. The Paladin is entirely standalone, and relatively upbeat. Another good place is The Pride of Chanur, which begins a series but has good closure.

I picked it up for the same price when it was a Daily Deal last week.

As of two hours ago I've got 30% left and it's pretty much guaranteed a place in my top three for the year. Terrific stuff, with as many twists and turns as you could ever hope for -and almost certainly a few more still to come.

Best 99p I've spent in months!

And there's currently a Juanita Coulson novel going free from Endeavour Venture.

Unto the Last Generation

amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca | amazon.com.au

Quote:
The last child. Humanity's final hope

Fifteen years ago, Earth’s population ceased to mushroom. Wholesale application of population control technology had rendered man infertile, and it's not long before society loses its mind.

The Young and Old begin to spar over whose rights are most important. Leaders rise out of the darkness, and in political uprising food becomes a much fought-over luxury. Famine, plague and war spread like wildfire. And no children are born – anywhere. Two generations later, the spread of the immuno-factor was complete.

A team of scientists, headed by Dr. Richard Parnell and wife Therese, works tirelessly to produce life artificially. Then one day, a young girl walks into their midst. “I’m eight,” the girl announces proudly. Mankind has been sterile for more than fifteen years… How can she be alive, and so young, when not a single child has been born for two generations?

Parnell and his team are now on a mission: to find the parents of this young girl, named Ria, before the trail runs cold and humanity’s last hope disappears into the darkness. Unto the Last Generation is a gripping technological sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian future America.

I debated about whether to put this in Science Fiction/Fantasy or Romance, but I finally came down on the Science Fiction/Fantasy side (with a cross-post in Romance), mainly because the second part of the title, The End of Forever Saga, sounded more Fantasy-ish to me.

In any case, The Tiger Catcher: The End of Forever Saga by Paullina Simons is the BN Readouts free book of the weekend, also matched at Kindle and Kobo US.

BN: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the...=9780062394774
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/End-Forever-N...dp/B0728GHT2N/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-tiger-catcher-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Internationally bestselling author Paullina Simons returns with a sweeping new saga guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, and fall in love.

All the colors of your world are about to disappear…

Young and handsome, Julian lives a charmed life in Los Angeles. His world is turned upside down by a love affair with Josephine, a mysterious young woman who takes him by storm. But she is not what she seems, carrying secrets that tear them apart—perhaps forever.

So begins Julian and Josephine’s extraordinary adventure of love, loss, and the mystical forces that bind people together across time and space. It is a journey that propels Julian toward either love fulfilled…or oblivion.

The Tiger Catcher takes readers from the dizzying heights of joy to the depths of despair and back again in an unforgettable new novel from a master storyteller.

Way Station by Clifford D. Simak is $1.99 at Amazon US.

It's Open Road, so it goes on sale periodically, but ereaderiq says it hasn't been $1.99 in the past year.

Quote:
Hugo Award Winner: In backwoods Wisconsin, an ageless hermit welcomes alien visitors—and foresees the end of humanity . . .

Enoch Wallace is not like other humans. Living a secluded life in the backwoods of Wisconsin, he carries a nineteenth-century rifle and never seems to age—a fact that has recently caught the attention of prying government eyes. The truth is, Enoch is the last surviving veteran of the American Civil War and, for close to a century, he has operated a secret way station for aliens passing through on journeys to other stars. But the gifts of knowledge and immortality that his intergalactic guests have bestowed upon him are proving to be a nightmarish burden, for they have opened Enoch’s eyes to humanity’s impending destruction. Still, one final hope remains for the human race . . . though the cure could ultimately prove more terrible than the disease.

Winner of the Hugo Award for Best Novel, Way Station is a magnificent example of the fine art of science fiction as practiced by a revered Grand Master. A cautionary tale that is at once ingenious, evocative, and compassionately human, it brilliantly supports the contention of the late, great Robert A. Heinlein that “to read science-fiction is to read Simak.”

This is published by "80 Pages, Inc" which only publishes books by Megg Jensen. That is, this is a self-published book.

As the first post requests, please don't post any self-published books (unless you have read them yourself, think they are excellent, and you're not connected to the author in any way)

Amazon owns Goodreads. Ratings on both are increasingly unreliable. I now only go by recommendation from people I know or have seemed sensible on SM or Forums.

My bad . It didn't occur to me to check if that publisher only published one author's books.

I couldn't find it on .co.uk or .com, only the Audible & paperback

Any ideas?

I thought a favourite from years ago and I bought it on paper last month. Still good.

Hmm. The link mysteriously logged me out. The title appeared again when I logged in again with my USA account. Though $9.99!
The paper edition from the UK cost £13.99. The Kindle version not available to Ireland, or even listed on .co.uk

just a guess, but I'd say you were at the page right as the sale ended. Not available as the price was being reset.

It's published (in the US) by Open Road Media. Keep an eye with ereaderiq. It'll be on sale again.

Kobo Canada has Way Station for $1.99 CDN... and if you're a VIP member, your discount applies.

It sounds intriguing, so I bought it. Hard to go wrong with a $2.02 purchase (tax included.)
