I, Libertine by Theodore Sturgeon and Jean Shepherd is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon US.

Likely more important for the back story than the actual novel, I, Libertine started as a practical joke by radio host (and A Christmas Story scribe) Jean Shepherd. It was an attempt to get a book that did not exist onto the bestseller lists of the day. Wikipedia has a decent article about it here: I, Libertine

There's also a fun article about it here: The Story of "I, Libertine" by Bob Kaye

Here's a quote from Shep as the book was being cooked up:

Quote:
At about 2 am one night, Shep said to his listeners, "let's all go to the local book stores tomorrow and ask for a book, that we, the Night People, know doesn't exist." Since it was a communal thing, he asked the listeners for suggestions for a title. Finally, at about 4:30 am someone came up with "I, Libertine". Shep then created an author, Frederick R. Ewing, formerly a British Commander in World War II, now a civil servant in Rhodesia, married to Marjorie, a horsewoman from the North Country. He was best known for his BBC broadcasts, on 18th century erotica. He was published by Excelsior Press, an imprint of Cambridge University. Now who's gonna argue with that? British--Cambridge--a wife named Marjorie?

So what's next? The first guy walks into the store and asks for "I, Libertine". The owner says he never heard of it. Man number two walks in asking for it. Now he says "it's on order." The next guy comes in. Now he's on the phone to the distributor. " Well, after 350 more guys ask for it, Publisher's Weekly is in shambles!"

The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg is currently $1.99 at online retailers.

Quote:
Max: Chill. Sports. Video games. Gay and not a big deal, not to him, not to his mom, not to his buddies. And a secret: An encounter with an older kid that makes it hard to breathe, one that he doesn't want to think about, ever.

Jordan: The opposite of chill. Poetry. The Chandler Mall. Never been kissed and searching for Mr. Right, who probably won't like him anyway. And a secret: A spiraling out of control mother, and the knowledge that he's the only one who can keep the family from falling apart.

Throw in a rickety, 1980s-era food truck called Coq Au Vinny. Add in prickly pears, cloud eggs, and a murky idea of what's considered locally sourced and organic. Place it all in Mesa, Arizona, in June, where the temp regularly hits 114. And top it off with a touch of undeniable chemistry between utter opposites.

Over the course of one summer, two boys will have to face their biggest fears and decide what they're willing to risk -- to get the thing they want the most.

The Morland Dynasty (35 books) by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles continues to be on sale at Amazon and Kobo. Some of the early books are as low as .99, but most are $3.99. Historical fiction that follows one family from early medieval times to the 1920s. The series has been completed. My Mom loves this series, I've only just started reading it.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Carver is $2.99 at Amazon US.

I don't think I could do a good summary of Raymond Carver's stories, but I highly recommend them. I'd also recommend Short Cuts, an excellent film made from several of his stories.

Quote:
In his second collection, including the iconic and much-referenced title story featured in the Academy Award-winning film Birdman, Carver establishes his reputation as one of the most celebrated short-story writers in American literature—a haunting meditation on love, loss, and companionship, and finding one’s way through the dark.

Lionheart is the fourth in Sharon Kay Penman's Plantagenets historical series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

I am a huge fan of Penman's too short four-book Justin de Quincy historical mystery series, but I also like the two or three of her "straight" historical books that I've read. So here's another one - woo-hoo!

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0054TVWOU
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/lionheart-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“The great Crusader king Richard the Lionheart comes alive in all his complex splendor in this masterpiece of medieval tapestry.”—Margaret George

A.D. 1189. After the death of his father, Henry II, and the early demise of two of his brothers, Richard is crowned King of England and immediately sets off for the Holy Land. This is the Third Crusade, marked by internecine warfare among the Christians and extraordinary campaigns against the Saracens. Richard’s surviving brother, the younger John, is left behind—and conspires with the French king to steal his brother’s throne. Only their mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, now freed from decades of captivity, remains to protect Richard’s interests and secure his destiny.

In this engrossing saga, Sharon Kay Penman delivers a novel of passion, intrigue, battle, and deceit. Lionheart is a sweeping tale of a heroic figure—feared by his enemies and beloved by those he commanded—who became a legend in his own lifetime.

Thank you for this one

An OT remark: The link is clearly to Amazon US but I am sent to Amazon UK where I can't buy ebooks.
This happens quite often when I click on links in "Deals and Resources" . Is there an explanation for this?

When I click on that Amazon.com link, I also get redirected to Amazon.co.uk. I wonder if it's to do with geolocation - I'm in the UK, and the poster is in Denmark.

That's probably, like others have mentioned, geolocation kicking in. I am in the Netherlands, and often get redirected to Germany (amazon.de).
