The Vanished Bride (Brontë Sisters Mystery, A Book 1) by Bella Ellis is $1.99

https://www.amazon.com/Vanished-Brid...t%2C167&sr=1-1

Quote:
Yorkshire, 1845. A young wife and mother has gone missing from her home, leaving behind two small children and a large pool of blood. Just a few miles away, a humble parson’s daughters—the Brontë sisters—learn of the crime. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë are horrified and intrigued by the mysterious disappearance.

These three creative, energetic, and resourceful women quickly realize that they have all the skills required to make for excellent “lady detectors.” Not yet published novelists, they have well-honed imaginations and are expert readers. And, as Charlotte remarks, “detecting is reading between the lines—it’s seeing what is not there.”

As they investigate, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne are confronted with a society that believes a woman’s place is in the home, not scouring the countryside looking for clues. But nothing will stop the sisters from discovering what happened to the vanished bride, even as they find their own lives are in great peril...

I can never read those. Or ones where a child is hurt. I had to DNF The Lovely Bones in the first chapter.

The Millennium Trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon tattoo, The Girl who played with Fire, The Girl who kicked the Hornets; Nest) by Stieg Larsson is just £0.99 at Amazon UK today.

I really enjoyed these three thrillers. I can't recommend the sequels by David Lagercrantz.

Julie Smith's books go on sale/free so often that they used to have their own thread. So mostly I don't post them any more since I assume that folks who want them already have them. Every now and then though, something will pop up that seems worth posting, like an omnibus or a new title.

And that's the case now - a volume of all four titles in Smith's Talba Wallis series is free at the moment at Kindle US and Kindle UK. So if you haven't tried the series, and think you might want to, you might grab this rather quickly - although Smith's titles go free quite often, they usually don't stay that way very long.

Titles include:
  • Louisiana Hotshot
  • Louisiana Bigshot
  • Louisiana Lament
  • P.I. on a Hot Tin Roof

The Deepest Grave is the 10th in Jeri Westerson's Crispin Guest medieval mystery series. Although I haven't read this one yet, I've read and quite enjoyed most of the titles in this series. Grave has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, but not at Kobo US, at least as of now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CWTVX4X

Spoiler:
Quote:
Crispin Guest must tackle a number of strange occurrences involving St Modwen’s Church and a missing relic in this latest medieval noir mystery.

London, 1392. Strange mischief is afoot at St Modwen’s Church. Are corpses stalking the graveyard at night, disturbing graves, and dragging coffins? When a fearful Father Bulthius begs Crispin Guest for his help, he agrees to investigate with his apprentice, Jack Tucker, intrigued by the horrific tales.

Meanwhile, an urgent summons arrives from Crispin’s former love, Philippa Walcote. Her seven-year-old son, Christopher, has been accused of murder and of attempting to steal a family relic – the missing relic of St Modwen.

Who is behind the gruesome occurrences in the graveyard? Is Christopher guilty of murder? Crispin faces a desperate race against time to solve the strange goings-on at St Modwen’s and prove a child’s innocence.

Today's Big Deal at Kindle UK is five recent (44-48) books in the Eve Dallas "In Death" series by JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts) for £0.99 each. This is probably in honor of the recent publication of the 50th in the series, Golden in Death.

FWIW, after reading and being okay with (but not more) some early books in this series in DTB many years ago, I recently got a chance to read an ARC of Golden in Death, and liked it more than I expected to - the police procedural elements were better than I remembered and the romance-y elements were less distracting (and easily skimmed over) than I remembered. So although I'm still debating, I probably will buy these myself .

Titles are:
  • Echoes in Death
  • Secrets in Death
  • Dark in Death
  • Leverage in Death
  • Connections in Death

And...

The Pale Horse, a non-series Agatha Christie title, is part of the normal Kindle UK Daily Deal, also at £0.99.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pale-Horse-...dp/B0046A9N1C/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A priest’s death leads to sinister goings-on in an old country pub…

To understand the strange goings on at The Pale Horse Inn, Mark Easterbrook knew he had to begin at the beginning. But where exactly was the beginning?

Was it the savage blow to the back of Father Gorman’s head? Or was it when the priest’s assailant searched him so roughly he tore the clergyman’s cassock? Or could it have been the priest’s visit, just minutes before, to a woman on her death bed?

Or was there a deeper significance to the violent squabble which Mark Easterbrook had himself witnessed earlier?

Wherever the beginning lies, Mark and his sidekick, Ginger Corrigan, may soon have cause to wish they’d never found it…

I've read and enjoyed a few of Chris Nickson's books, including the first in his Richard Nottingham series, so I'm happy to see the second in that series, Cold Cruel Winter, go on sale at Kindle US for $1.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Cruel-Winter-...dp/B005WTP0L8/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Second in the highly-acclaimed Richard Nottingham historical mystery series 1732. Richard Nottingham, Constable of the City of Leeds, is grieving the death of his daughter, but he must rouse himself from his lethargy when the body of wealthy wool merchant Samuel Graves is discovered, his throat slit, the skin razed from his back. Why would the killer want Graves' skin? When Nottingham receives a slim, bound volume entitled The Journal of a Wronged Man he discovers the shocking answer - and it hurls him into a desperate battle for survival against a ruthless killer with old scores to settle.

The Judge's House is the 22nd (webpage) or 21st (SYKM) in the Maigret series by Georges Simenon. It was originally published in English as Maigret in Exile, but as Penguin has been re-issuing them in ebook, they seem to have been going back to some of the original titles from the French - which was La maison du juge in this case.

In any case, House has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XVB9C90
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-judge-s-house-5

Spoiler:
Quote:
“One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.” —The Guardian

Exiled from Paris, Maigret discovers some disturbing secrets in a sleepy coastal town

“A short, sprightly man appeared in the doorway, looked left and right, and went back into the passage. A moment later, the improbable happened. The little man reappeared, bent over, clinging to a long mass that he now started dragging through the mud. It must have been heavy. After four meters, he stopped to catch his breath. The front door of the house had been left open. The sea was still twenty or thirty meters away.”

Maigret has been exiled from Paris to a remote province, having offended his superiors. Out of his element, he finds himself utterly bored—until a murder case arrives.

Revelation is the fourth in CJ Sansom's Matthew Shardlake series, all of whose titles have, per SYKM, either won or been finalists for Historical Dagger awards. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001R11C94
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rev...rdlake-mystery

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery series continues with this fourth suspenseful installment by the bestselling author of Winter in Madrid and Dominion. In 1543, while Tudor England is abuzz with King Henry VIII's wooing of Lady Catherine Parr, Matthew Shardlake is working to defend a teenage boy, a religious fanatic being held in the infamous Bedlam hospital for the insane. Then, when an old friend is murdered, Shardlake's search for the killer leads him back not only to Bedlam but also to Catherine Parr-and the dark prophecies of the Book of Revelation.

Hailed as a "virtuoso performance" (The Denver Post) and "historical fiction writing at its best" (The Tampa Tribune), Revelation is a must-read for fans of Hilary Mantel, Margaret George, and Philippa Gregory.

The Way Through the Woods is the tenth in the Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter. Per SYKM, it won the Gold Dagger in 1992. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FY679E
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...gh-the-woods-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
"Cunning...Your imagination will be frenetically flapping its wings until the very last chapter."
THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
Morse is enjoying a rare if unsatisfying holiday in Dorset when the first letter appears in THE TIMES. A year before, a stunning Swedish student disappeared from Oxfordshire, leaving behind a rucksack with her identification. As the lady was dishy, young, and traveling alone, the Thames Valley Police suspected foul play. But without a body, and with precious few clues, the investigation ground to a halt. Now it seems that someone who can hold back no longer is composing clue-laden poetry that begins an enthusiastic correspondence among England's news-reading public. Not one to be left behind, Morse writes a letter of his own--and follows a twisting path through the Wytham Woods that leads to a most shocking murder.
