Thanks a lot, @davidfor. Sadly, a new SD with your image didn't help. My reader seems completely dead apart from the red LED. No USB connection, no screen update, nothing.

Pushing and holding the power button until the LED comes on and then frantically tapping the bottom corners didn't do anything either.

Is there anything else I could try or is it time to move on?

Apart from making sure everything is plugged in correctly, and that it is charged, there isn't much. But, does the power LED start flashing, or just turns off? And does the screen look OK?

The LED comes on without flashing when I hold the button for 2 seconds and turns off cleanly without flashing when I hold the power button for about 7 seconds. I checked and double checked all connections (ribbon cables, battery, SD), I don't see anything wrong there.
The screen looks okay, although it only shows those 4 squares. It seems to have taken its last breath while booting.

Tried two different SD cards now, no results. There's no restriction on what card to use, right? I tried an 8GB class 10 Transcend and a 16GB class 10 Sandisk Ultra.

I checked on my Glo HD. When I turn it on, the red LED comes on steady for about five seconds. It starts flashing when the screen is cleared and stops when the dancing circles start.

There has been plenty of discussion about what is the best SD card, but the all should work. I have a 32GB card in my Glo HD. I'm pretty sure it is a Sandisk Ultra, but, it's choice was purely based on price.

Well, that sucks. Another one for the landfill after 4 years...
Either way, thanks once more for being so helpful towards a complete stranger, I really appreciate it!

Unfortunately, yes. But, you can probably sell it as parts as someone will want a good screen.

I just threw the PCB into a reflow oven as a last-ditch effort (large ICs up, heat on the low side, around 160°C; for about 7 minutes) and it actually works now as if nothing ever happened. Might be worth a try if everything else fails...

That's certainly a last ditch attempt! I'm glad to hear to actually worked.

I already got a Clara HD in the meantime, but I'm very glad I could give it away to someone who will use it instead of having to dump it.

SD card seems to have become corrupted and wouldn't you know it, I lost the backup image I had before.

If someone could be so kind as to PM a link to the sd card image for the Kobo Glo HD, it would be much appreciated.

That's the only thing I haven't tried yet. Any tips on how to avoid melting plastic parts such as mSD slot or flat cable connectors? Can I use the regular, kitchen oven?

You won't melt anything if you keep temperature and duration within reasonable ranges. An oven (albeit a different one) is how these things are soldered in the first place so you don't need to worry about it below 200°C, really.

Kitchen oven should work as well. I'd preheat the oven to around 120°C and put the PCB in with the black ICs and connectors up (just the PCB, no frame, battery, display, µSD, nothing!) You'd probably do well to prop it up on two or three pieces of cork or similar so it doesn't touch the baking sheet and let it heat to around 160°C. I'd stay within 10 to 15 minutes total.

Good luck!

Hi, It seems like my time to request an sd image has come at last. My Kobo Is stuck sleeping and won't respond to anything. Already tried unplugging the battery, so I'm hoping the sd to be the problem.
Thanks to whoever will listen!
