I"m saying mobipocket 6.0 won't recognize the kindle when I run it on my laptop. I can use it for library organization, (not as good as Calibre), but not for transferring book files.

I can get my kindle pid using igors script. The one that doesn't exist.

Do intot he icon's properties and set it for Windows XP and then try running it.

If I had a K1, I'd give it a go and see if it really works or not under Windows 7 beta.

What do you use the mobipocket 6.0 for? I have the K2 and Win7, if you'd like me to try it out.

No, see I don't need for Mobipocket to recognize the K.

And I use Firefox not explorer.

It is another way to get your PID, at least it worked with the K1.

Bob. Firefox simply replaces IE Explorer.

I haven't used Explorer since I got this laptop last year.

I haven't added anything.

Yes, I know. It doesn't replace "Windows Explorer" in any way. Usually when people say "explorer" and files that is what they are talking about. When you double click on "My Computer" or browse your hard drive and folder you are using "explorer". To me Internet Explorer is not "explorer" it is IE.

Although I went back in this thread and tried to find what you were referring to and your message was the first one that mentioned explorer.

I think there is some confusion between Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer -- both are often just called "Explorer"

My local library's ebook site has four Nero Wolfe novels available. Of course you do not need Kindlepid.py AT ALL to get them on your Kindle. So even if Amazon was actually able to keep you from getting the file, you could still read them. They're all in Mobipocket format so you could just register the PID from your desktop Mobipocket reader and use mobidedrm to strip off the DRM. If they were in PDF, there are similar scripts for liberating PDFs.

This is of questionable legality. If Amazon did actually snoop on your Kindle and figure out that you'd done this you could be in trouble. So far they haven't but none of us can guarantee they won't in the future. They reserve the right to do so.

Edit: And for the record, I don't think most Kindle owners use the library. Most people don't use the library even for print books. Upon finding out about the library ebook selection I think many would be interested until you told them they had to run scripts from a *gasp* CLI to make them work. I think most people's eyes would glaze over 10 seconds into the explanation. This is why, when asked what I do for a living, I say something generic like "engineer" or "I work with computers". One day when my mother and my sister (a Kindle owner as well) felt particularly game, they asked me to tell them explicitly what I did. They realized they had no idea. They lasted about 30 seconds before full eye-glaze. I don't even do anything that esoteric. I don't think that MobileRead is anywhere near a microcosm of Kindle owners. That's why I don't think they feared non-Amazon sales. I think they fear iPhone owners, specifically jailbroken iPhone owners, who are likely more tech savvy and more inclined to file share.

True. But if Amazon started using the DMCA against individual Kindle users in such a fashion, the negative publicity would be far beyond anything they're getting now. It would be an incredibly stupid move...but, yeah, doesn't mean it won't happen.

Me, I'm not currently concerned about the de-drm'd (but legally purchased) ebooks on my Kindle.

Same here. Every book is legally purchased on my Kindle. They might not all have come from Amazon but I bought them all from popular online stores!
