I'm confused- you can just close the library software and then it is safe to disconnect.

Some people may not want to close the library software? Perhaps?

FYI: Closing the eBook library doesn't actually "eject" the device. But, as long as nothing is accessing it you are usually ok doing that.

I am not running the Sony software, but I'm curious: if you do it that way (just close the library and unplug), does Windows complain with its typical "Hey! You didn't disconnect the device before...um...disconnecting the device!"

Never happened to me in over a year of doing it that way. I just closed the software and waited a few seconds for the 'don't unplug' warning on the Readers screen to go away.

I guess I have never disconnected my PRS the correct way until now-- Or any other USB accessories. I just tried it and it's damn hard to tell which one to select. I've got twenty or so devices connected, and the Sony and the memory cards show up as six of them. I think I'll just keep yanking the cord out like I've been doing for the last six months.

Just closing the library software does not work for me. The device is still shown in the USB hardware list unless I click the little arrow next the reader in the library software, which does work.

Your choice. Perhaps you'll change your mind when you corrupt the PRS's internal memory and you lose all your books . The PRS should always connect as the same "drive letter", so once you know which one it is, you'll know which one to dismount.

I alyways disconnect my USB devices correctly. Every single time, for years. The one time that I didn't, the one single goddamn time I didn't because I was in a hurry and I thought "Oh come on, nothing will happen, and I don't have seconds to spare", I corrupted my USB drive and lost 2 gigabytes of very important data.

So do try to do it correctly.

Ouch.

Hate it when that happens.

I have a removable USB drive that doesn't like to spin down as fast as I like, and have dreaded finding one day I was going to have a very expensive paperweight.

If it's saying it can't be stopped make sure you don't have anything else open with it. I know when I first connect my reader I get a folder that opens I have to close that window before the ebook library or safely remove hardware will let me eject the reader.

Just make sure the device is mounted in Sync mode. In that case, whenever no Flashing is seen anymore, it can be plugged out (Linux/Mac OS-X). Windows is a crap. With Sony's software wanting to control it - you first have to end that Softare, wait a while, then you should be able to remove it through the device manager...

Maybe, but probably not. My books aren't in the internal memory. They're on the data card. So do I dismount the data card or the reader or both? Besides, I have my books backed up nine ways to Sunday.
