Some colleagues at work are quite disappointed. We share the building with a drugstore that sells many grocery items, and their trash bins are in our parking lot. Until recently, one of these bins was dumpster diving heaven; tons of just expired items. Unfortunately they've now installed a lock on the lid This does make it a lot more awkward for both the drugstore staff and the trash collection company, and now our days of tons of freebies are over.

The other day someone left a nice, Ashley Furniture couch by the dumpster; it ws just a bit dirty. I took the comfortable, foam padding (seats?), but couldn't take the whole couch 'cause of my shoulders. A few hours later it was gone. The nice, old school TV sitting beside the couch was gone too. If only I had a dolly and some help... #nicedumpsterfinds

Earlier this evening, I was down the hallway using my neighbor's wifi when another neighbor loudly called out in a drunken stupor, "Everytime I see you you're down there! What are you doing?! Oh, you have a tablet?! You're using someone's wifi? You could use mine so you don't have to go all the way down there! It's Will Wifi and the password is..." Needless to say, I was mortified. So now 'm sitting on a cardboard box, hiding near the stairs, using the same neighbor's wifi! *roll eyes*

Work-wise I'm not feeling very motivated for the next couple of days.

Those last days of the Christmas vacation are my least favourite. You get a lot of kids that are fed up with being dragged along with their parents. Parents are fed up with correcting their kids and get upset when you ask them to keep an eye on them or you when you ask their kids to behave.

People also get upset that we don't do repairs throughout the day, only during consulting hours. They want to get the thing looked at before the end of the vacation, I can understand that. But it's not realistic to expect a STORE to do repairs all day every day. They usually get upset that they came all the way from Wherever for nothing.

Then there are the items that run out. Most supplier are closed during the weeks of Christmas and New Year, most of them do inventory. We always try to stock up on items, but we have limited storage space. Add to that that supplier don't tend to get new stock in in December, because of inventory (if they have less stock it's less work). Supplies get back to normal from mid January onwards.

So, for various reason, tempers can run high. On the other hand, when it's busy time goes by quickly. Hopefully it isn't too busy to have lunch, if I don't have lunch I tend to start getting hangry by 4pm.

Just three more days of chaos, then next week things are getting normal again. It'll still be busy, but most with businesses having a new budget and/or having time to get chores done. After that I go on my annual Reading Retreat week.

Gah. My husband's family is working on getting his 89 year old mom in a nursing home. She will be on Medicaid quickly, so they are getting the process started, as her being on her own is fast becoming a problem.

For her to be in a private room, the family must pay the difference, about $525 per month. There are 4 siblings living, with the deceased brother having made arrangements for $200 a month to continue to his mom. So $325 I think to split 4 ways. Except the oldest sister, who just remarried (a rather wealthy man) says she can't help.

It won't prevent everyone else from helping, but this sister has always been all about the money. She doesn't have a lot of money, but she did buy a house, is on disability, worked 2 jobs the past 10 years or so, and is now in a really good place with the new hubby. They are buying a house in Florida so they can live there 5 months, and here the other 7.

But she can't afford to help pay under $100 a month so her elderly mom can be in a private room.

My grandmother's care was $8900/month. Tell her she should be bloody grateful that that's all it is.

It's $235 per day for a private room, $217 semi-private self-pay, so $7,000+

Medicaid pays for a semi-private room, so you pay the difference if you want a private room.

When I was POA for a great aunt in the 90's, her nursing home (self-pay) was $105 per day. Times 5 years. She had $250,000 when it started, there was about $55,000 left when she died. It was right when investments had tanked here in the states. So the 8% it had been earning also went in the dumper at the same time.

There isn't anything of value, maybe a ring or two. She has less than $8k right now, that will go quickly for the spend-down. Prepaying the rest of the funeral will probably take most of it.

There is some furniture, but nobody in the family needs anything...we're getting rid of stuff in anticipation of downsizing during the next few years. In the private room she'll have room for her lift chair, tv, dresser, possibly her card table for puzzles. She doesn't have any antiques or anything, not like my mom.

None of us are rich, my husband and his younger sister still work full time. We have no debt, but we are pouring every spare nickel into retirement and a possible move, which is looming.

No one is surprised by this. Saddened maybe, not surprised.
