I've just created a blog called "Dear Jeff Bezos,". I'm going to post a public letter to J.B. regarding my disappointment on how Amazon has handled the situation with KindlePID and KindleFIX. I will start a separate thread about the letter because I hope to get input from MobileRead members. If I can find an email address I will send a copy to Mr. Bezos as well. I will then ask for your help in "digging" the post.

It may take a few days to get my thoughts together.

Well we have another ITunes on our hands. And that was why I figured that the Kindle was not the way to go.

Instead of taking this down, you should have started collecting money for a lawsuit.

For those of you who have decided not to do business with Amazon in the future, just as a question to think about: What would it take from Amazon at this point to win your business back?

For example, if they issue a press release acknowledging that this wasn't a DMCA violation after all, and apologizing to Mobileread for the inconvenience, would that be enough?

For me, yes.

The main purpose and most wonderful feature of this board is helping people use their devices to the fullest.

Using Kindlefix to read library books legally (I'm not talking about anything else here) is one of the most useful applications for the Kindles.

Not being able to help people do this just sticks in my craw.

Actually I was thinking that if I decide to return my Kindle that I would buy a PRS-505 FROM Amazon...

My problem with Amazon is more systemic and much broader than the problem under discussion. For me to start patronizing Amazon, there would need to be several changes, including these: the Amazon ebookstore would need to be open to everyone regardless of device (i.e., adoption of the ePub standard) and Amazon would have to stop demanding that authors and publishers use only Amazon's POD publishing services. i would consider those two steps a very favorable start and would then add Amazon to my buy list.

Does the Sony store sell ePub books to owners of devices other than the Sony reader?

The Sony store doesn't sell ePub at all. (AFAIK).

I see a lot of people question whether library useage is really widespread. I, for one, was seriously thinking of switching to a Sony 505 in order to get library books. In this economy, shelling out $400 for an ereader is not an easy decision - to then be told you have to BUY books instead of getting them from the LIBRARY is just too much.

And I did buy books from sources other than Amazon because they had lower prices. Not frequently, but a couple times. What this is doing is putting the kindle even further out of reach for most people. I intend to fill my kindle with free books from the kindle store and buy a Sony in order to read library books. I was looking at one at Target last night, but all they had was silver. Of course, when the next Stephen King comes out, I will buy it from a source other than Amazon.

For us library users, switching to ebooks was a big decision. If we are being asked to end useage of the library and spend money on all our reading material, that bodes ill for the library and for ebooks. This just might be the end of ebooks.

Recommend the Sony reader, BeBook or CyBook instead. The latter two both support mobi whilst the first supports ePub (which admittedly isn't all that common for purchases yet).
This is absolutely right. I responded to someone online, and showed them my kindle, and I have spoken with 4 people on the train this week and told them how much I love my kindle. From now on, it is how much I want a Sony 505, and how sorry I am I bought from Amazon.

It can, though I think mobi support has been added only since last Autumn. I've just got a HanLin device, and I'm quite happy with the standard mobi support (it also supports DRM and thus library books). No user fonts for it yet, but there's a sans serif and a serif (looks like Times), and three size levels that are adequate, but not ideal.

And before you ask, HarryT , I used to have CyBook. The button placement really didn't work for me, and I need more stable PDF support.
