Tags and Tag Browser
I wanted to know about the feature that indicates that you can change a tag in the browser. I have heirarchal tags so I can easily find books in the library. What I don't like is the actual tags themselves. I like the actual tags to be kind of simple. Instead of a tas being:
Genre.Science Fiction.Speculative Fiction.Apocalypse Genre.Science Fiction.Speculative Fiction.Steampunk Genre.Science Fiction.Space Opera Characters.SF.Aliens I want to see the simple versions in the actual book records. Apocalypse, Steampunk, Space Opera, Aliens I like the clean simple tags for the catalogs and the book records, but I need the heirarchal to keep the browser easy for searches. Since I have a ton of tags, and genres, and Goodreads Bookshelves, I need those heriarchal tags in the browser. Also, it gets kind of complicated when trying to figure if a New Adult Romance book is tagged Genre.Fiction.New Adult.Romance, or New Adult.Romance, or Romance.New Adult. If I don't make them all standardized, I can have multiple tags for New Adult Romance, when I just want one. So, I was noticing that when I edit a tag in the browser there is an option to change the tag, or the tag in the virtual library. I wanted to know if this option means what it generally sounds like, changing the tag in the browser doesn't affect the tag in the records. If this is true, then is there an easier way to go about changing all those tags without having to go individually in the browser? Like managing tags? Is there a way of importing a .csv list with the old tag,and how I want the tag shown in the browser, and how I want the tag to be used in the records? Some advice or clarification please? I need to clean up those tags. I tried using the CALM plugin, but I have run into difficulties that aren't really suitable for listing on this thread. My goal is to have simple actual tags, but nice heirarchal tags in the browser for searches. I don't need Science Fiction, Space Opera, Alien Invasion, Speculative Fiction and Steampunk to be listed all over the browser, when they can be compressed and make searches easier. |

I was always curious why folk tagged the obvious
to me If it ain't non-fiction, it is fiction. and since 90% of my library is fiction why do I need to say Fiction.Science Fiction when Science Fiction would suffice even if it did nit include the word Fiction why the the need for the Speculative Fiction tag (or the SF tag if that rocks your boat) as one is commonly used to in place of the other (I personally detest the slang tags:SyFy, Scifi...) Now lets go back to your long hierarchical tag The search tool allow AND queries so why try an all-inclusive tag Steampunk Science Fiction (or Speculative) or include the AND between the 2 when you want the ONLY IF case And I usually split Science Fiction & Fantasy into 2 tags (when it is both) or drop the one that it isn't (that tag was how RETAIL shelved these) OK end of my rant Preferences: Behavior:Searching: Grouped searches: allows for creative searching |

I like the aesthetics in the tag browser. I like seeing all the different Science Fictions to be grouped together. Plus there are sub-themes, characters, and settings, eras, etc.
It doesn't look nice if I have Steampunk, followed by Standalone, then Shapeshifters in the tag broweser all in order when I can have Science fiction / Steampunk Characters / Paranormal / Shapeshifters Characters / Paranormal / Vampires Book Style / Standalone (yes they weren't alphabetical) See...much prettier and easy to navigate in the browser. However, makes for ugly tags. Last edited by Rellwood; 01-04-2020 at 05:08 PM. Reason: expanding on reply |

I am a failure when it comes to figuring out searches. I like to click on the tag browser and use that to figure out what I am looking for. You know. all these tags but none of these tags. Using search requires me to know the tag name.

No if you want hierarchical tags, your tags have to contain th full hierarchy.

@Rellwood - I have a separate Genre custom column that I display in the book list. If I want to see the hierarchical tags in the list I use the header right click menu Show/Hide .... option.
I also have View Manager views that show the hierarchical Tags; I mainly use them when entering/maintaining metadata. BR |
