Ok. I will try to determine why I see that on some dialogs and not others. Perhaps it is a timing issue or something to do with my system graphics.

Switching to night mode gets me more rows for the book list. Switching back and I see less. Nothing else is changed by me. Is there some font adjustment, or automagically extra row spacing adjustment?
BTW: Row spacing seems to max out at -12px

Another issue I have is that after performing a search, the selected books have a greenish background color with an white font color. Together they are hardly visible. Perhaps some darker green background color can be chosen to make the font standout more? Or changing the font color to black-ish?

@DrChiper: Dark mode has no affect on row sizes, it only changes colors. The search highlight color does indeed need to be changed for dark mode, will be in next release.

scrollbar sliders are pretty hard to see in light mode as well, seems to be a "feature" of the Qt fusion style. But since I already had to override various things in that style to get dark mode to work, I'll see if I can override that as well to raise the contrast a bit.

I use the dark mode on windows, but I'd prefer calibre to remain in light mode. Is there a simple way to do this? I searched in the settings but can't find a way. Probably there's an option to do this in some file, but I'm not a python user (I'm not even sure calibre is in python). Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Where do I add the line above? Went through env variables but I can only edit the path, not a file. Sorry but I never customized Calibre out of the normal settings window.

The link in the manual Kovid pointed you to does a good job of explaining how to set the variables. You need to click New. I attached my variables as a general example. The system variables don't have to be duplicated in the user section and vice-a-versa.

In making the setting, I reviewed all settings and found some debris from apps no longer installed (uninstall does not seem to clean any ENV/Path settings ) It might help your system performance to clean things up)

In a command prompt window: Type set<and hit enter>

I found at least 3 entries on my PATH that no longer are present (eyeballed Program files, and program files (x86)

)
I also found a couple that were IMHO, placed early in the list (higher priority) that I reordered (this is done using the same setting tool used for setting ENV)

for those who don't know: When a program is requested, the PATH folders are searched in order until it is located. it look no further, which may miss a newer/better version because it was later on the list. The INVERSE may also be true. You NEED the older version. Your job is to find which way works.

I've managed to do it

Never set an environment variable before, so it was not easy for a n00b like me. Btw, it's possible to have the dark mode on Calibre as an option in the normal settings window in aspect? It would be more configurable case by case instead to delete/create the variable every time.
