Now, I should update to which version in order to keep the device JB? 5.12.2? 5.12.3? 5.11.2? The hotfix will survive?

Once the latest hotfix is installed prior to update the jb survives on any firmware, 5.12.3 including.

I installed 5.12.2, hotfix survived, and installed KUAL hotfix variant.

You really, really do not want to do that. "Factory Reset" does not do what you expect.


What you should do, if running a "Factory firmware", is install a "Customer firmware" and stay away from any of the 5.12.x firmware series.
All previous to current firmware versions are still on the Amazon server, just modify the current firmware's version field to download.


THEN you can start by re-installing our add-ins.
ALSO stay away from "Factory Reset" on ANY condition or for ANY reason.

That should apply to the full set of 16? devices (where ? is [QRSTUV]). Not that we've currently seen any of those other than the Blue one .

In a similar fashion, the Indian PW4s (102/103) also required a newer-than-release FW. It happened to match what we have on hand (5.10.1.3), so that's less of an issue in practice.

That kind of trickery is usually detailed in KindleTool .

BTW, I forgot to comment that mine is an 8347 (08/26/2018) 5.10.0.1 bought from Amazon UK this last November 2019.

G000 T607 8347 XXXX

32 GB, WiFi only, Black, Special Offers.

Never connected it to WiFi and kept it in airplane mode since.
Jailbraking and deployment of Kual and KOReader was a breeze.

I was concerned as I bricked my PW3 while trying to jailbreak it. Nothing I couldn't reverse with the serial jailbreak but as that option seems unavailable for now for the PW4, this felt like a higher risk to me.

One issue with the PW3 was we had really old factory firmware and what seems to be new, unsupported/incompatible hardware revisions.

Amazon doesn't really allow downgrades anymore so as long as you're not downgrading and are only installing factory firmware >= stock firmware, it's pretty safe.

That said, there doesn't appear to be new hardware revisions yet that brick on 5.10.1.3.

I know it is like opening a can of worms but is there an actual difference that could induce me to migrate to a newer FW version? I usually stick to Kual and KOReader, so stuff that runs on native kindlespace does not tempt me much...

And BTW I don't blame anyone but myself for bricking my PW3. After all, and as I said I recovered it with some elbow grease involved (USB-Serial adapter plus mosfet level converters) and have been using it until I got this new PW4 only because of the additional storage.
