What's so bad about a Kindle?

I’d be interested in a paper white but not until it gets a comfort lite. For amazon to have this on the $29 Fire 7 I bought but not a dedicated ereader is in excusable

I'm still using, and enjoying, a Kindle Keyboard model but I do find the comments about the Kobo and collections appealing.

How does one get a book from Calibre into the Kobo? email is convenient but has now become much less convenient with Kindle since it now involves receiving and verifying a confirmation email from Amazon.

You prefer to manage collections by hand? Why? I've never had a single issue with Calibre managing collection on a Sony Reader or Kobo Aura H2O.

There are two ways to get an eBook in Calibre onto a Kobo. One is to use the Reading List plugin and once properly configured, you can select which book(s) to send to the Kobo when you plug it in or you can plug it in and manually selecting what you want to send to the Kobo and use the send to device menu option. And once properly configured, you can have collections managed for you by just using the series and tag fields.

Only using an USB cable, I'm afraid. There's no wireless option to send your non-Kobo purchases to the device, AFAIK.

Primitive and slow as it may be, Kobo's web browser does handle the mobile version of the Calibre content server (http://<ip_address>:8080/mobile). I have the server enabled on Calibre startup and running 24/7.

Convenient for those times when you're already in bed and don't want to get up to go to the office/PC/living room to load a book on your device.

I actually have Calibre set up to auto-add books saved to a Dropbox folder so I can browse for stuff via phone or tablet, download and save to Dropbox, and then just use the web browser on Kobo/Kindle to download the new book. Laziness Automation ftw!

Thanks! I don't have a problem with using a USB cable (I don't think, having only done email with the Kindle) -- and I'm really intrigued by the collection management options; I'll have to look into that a little more.

I always use Calibre, but during the holidays I didn't have a PC with me.
Sending the books to kobo is very easy if you have Android, just download the books on your phone, start an app / server on the phone (I used SimpleHttpServer) and using the kobo browser you can enter the server address and download what you want on your kobo with just one click.
This is not possible if you have an iPhone (Android rules lol)

The Kobo Forma has a built-in Dropbox capability now. It does restrict you to a single directory on Dropbox but it automatically checks for new books and/or updated book when a sync is run.

Hopefully, that capability will be extended to the other Kobo models in a future firmware update.

I thought Google hampered the ability to run servers on later Android versions. I was almost resigned to having to do a DIY portable RasPi LAMP server. Now off to find a PHP server that will work on Oreo and Pie.

Yes. Part of the fun of having a new book on my kindle is deciding which Collection/s to put it into.
