thank you. appreciate your input. humidity makes me more ill than I already am so that's a no go. and honestly, if it wasn't for the pups, I wouldn't even have heat on. I prefer cold.

I never had this issue with any other device, not kindles, nor phones, nor tablets, not tvs, computers, printers, etc., and not through all of the decades of use.

if the device itself, other than the lighting, was better suited to me, I might be more inclined to keep dealing with it, but no. not this device, and not these issues. I find it ridiculous for things to be changed when I haven't touched it for hours and it's been in a sleep mode. I'm getting out while the getting is good. already printed the return label. I tried but it's been one thing after another for a week. stick me with a fork.

It's the right decision, as your Oasis is certainly defective. That's not a normal behavior by any stretch.

one final note that cements my decision to return as the right one - when I started packing it up tonight the battery was down to 74% after not being touched since yesterday when it was put down at 92%. geeze Louise...

eta: I'm charging it to make sure it gets back to Amazon intact

It was probably still indexing. It's best to keep the Kindle connected to a wall charger after loading it with books, until it has finished indexing. Otherwise the indexing is very slow and wears the battery down.

nothing was indexing. was already finished. I keep very few books on my devices - at least initially, that way I can judge battery life. I also sideload so I'm not dealing with the cloud ever. never had that issue with my PW2 even when I loaded it with books and I used to stuff it. and never had to keep it on a charger during indexing.

also, since I don't use any of the stats, pages, reading progress, learn my reading speed, it should be straightforward, imo. no cloud, no stats, etc. I use the light and that's it.

OT - my Clara HD gets here tomorrow. it will be interesting comparing it to a PW4. roughly the same form factor so I'm pretty jazzed.

The indexing process is different on newer Kindles than it was on older models. Nothing to do with cloud, it's the same with sideloaded books. Unless kept on a charger, the indexing is extremely slow now.

But if you checked and nothing was indexing, then it isn't that.

I checked yesterday. I know cloud isn't involved directly, but I wasn't using it, airplane mode, no indexing. all other things apply. battery shouldn't have dropped that much.

eta: knowing about indexing, I always load in small chunks

I think the whole "thin is better" concept with devices these days is really messed up. Instead of putting a big battery in devices, they build them almost razor thin and use small batteries. If you carefully read the advertisements for the battery life of the Oasis 3 and then do some simple math, what sounds like weeks between charges is actually marketing-speak, and it really translates to 21 hours of estimated use with BT and WiFi both off and the screen light set fairly low. So yes, if a person only reads half an hour a day and never turns on WiFi or BT and keeps the light off or at least below level 14, then they might get a few weeks before having to charge. But why pay $250 for a reader if you only rarely use it? Most people that buy them likely read a lot more than that, and many probably have at least WiFi on. If they use the Audible feature, then they have to run BT as well. In my case, I leave BT always off, only use WiFi for a few minutes each day to use Whispersync so my place in my books is available across all my devices, and I rarely get more than a few days between charging. But I read several hours each day, plus I charge before it falls below 30% which is better for the battery in the long term. I would be willing to bet that if we could completely disable about 90% of the Amazon BS marketing features we never use, all that stuff designed to sell us more books, the darn battery would likely last a lot longer. But Amazon isn’t going to give us that option before the 12th of Never.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get your Oasis 3 to work out for you. I finally seem to have one that is good and I’m very happy with it. I’m not happy about the Amazon Cloud not working correctly with either of my Kindles though, but that is almost certainly due to terrible Cloud programming rather than an issue with the Kindles. I cannot see or adequately manage universal collections using the Cloud when it comes to the Kindles, so that means extra work creating and managing the collections directly on each Kindle, which kind of defeats the purpose of even having a cloud IMO, but at least I finally have my Oasis 3 set up the way I want it even though it took way longer than using a Kindle app on a non-Kindle device. That wasn't a deal killer by any means, but it is certainly aggravating.

thank you. it's a beautiful device, truly, but mine had so much weirdness. the form factor was never perfect for me either so perhaps all these strange things merely facilitated my getting device(s) with a form factor that makes me happy.

so glad to hear you're happy. I was thinking about you last night and wondering. nice to know it worked out.

neither here nor there but when I'm well and not working I read a lot. unfortunately, the last few years have dogged me badly health-wise so my total hours reading have fallen. but when well I read several hours a day and prefer a battery similar to the PW2 that I don't have to charge every night. the new PW4 still may not get me that, but maybe the Clara HD will. I remain hopeful and will keep trying readers until I find one that gives me what I need in form factor and battery life.

Static discharge can be hard to notice. I've only ever experienced kindle freezes that I suspected were caused by static discharge. If it caused a page turn, I would not expect big jumps.

If you hold it where you touched it and repeatedly gently squeeze and release and see if that triggers jumps.
Sorry, but that's just wrong. We have had it be very dry inside and yes, we'd sometimes get static shocks from touching some things. But what never got zapped was my H2O. If the Oasis is that sensitive, then it's a defective design and needs to go back. There's no way it should be acting that flakey.

I've never had a problem with an iPhone or iPad due to static.

that's the thing. I have an old ipad mini, several Samsungs in various sizes and ages, and have never had a static issue. there was something wrong with the Oasis 3.

it came with no protection, just a padded envelope and who knows what UPS did with it on its way from viva Las Vegas to me.

I received my first PW4 in a box that they had played football and drop kick with and, with the Oasis issues, I refused to even keep it and open it. I sent it back yesterday and a new one is arriving tomorrow. not a good year for tiny devices in insufficiently protected packaging.
