And this could be something as simple as changing the PID for your Kindle via Whispernet. Then unless you turn Whispernet on to "accept" the change, you have no way of reading any newly downloaded ebooks because they have a different PID. So when you turn on Wispernet, they "update" your firmware to a new, more crippled version.

I'm trying to decide whether to send my Kindle 2 back. I'm thoroughly disgusted with Amazon and sent them an email stating that. If I do decide to keep it, whispernet will remain off. I'll download everything to my desktop and load it onto the Kindle from there. That way I won't have to worry about a software update that would not allow me to read what I want on it.
Oh yeah, I won't be buying anymore products including ebooks from Amazon and when my gift cards in the MP3 store are used up I'm not buying anymore from them. |

Argh, this is just sad. I enjoy using kindlepid/kindlefix to check out ebooks from my local library. I can read things from authors I might not have tried before, which can lead to more future purchases from Amazon.

The question that remains for me, though, is whether Amazon will start snooping on my Kindle. So far, we know they haven't but they clearly reserve the right to do so. I've read deDRMed content on my Kindle and haven't heard a peep out of them. Someone also posted on the Kindle forum the other day that the Ebay seller they bought their used Kindle 1 from had left several Amazon books in the memory. They weren't removed when they registered. This to me says they're not paying any attention to what we have loaded. This may change. I hope they realize that it would be a PR fiasco if they ever did that. It would make this and the TTS thing look like a walk in the park. |

I've only had my Kindle2 for a week and a half now. I bought it so I could get books from the public library here. We're relocating to Europe this summer and wanted to continue to read the library books for free. I didn't intend to purchase many books (but for the ones I did, I planned to get them from Amazon). I prefer using the library - I have for years with the pbooks and wanted to continue with ebooks.
Now, I need to figure out if I should keep the Kindle2 and worry about what Amazon will do next or if I should return it and get a different reader that I can use in Europe (don't need the wireless or text options as far as I know - I'm happy to transfer using USB/computer) with the library books.... I was so excited to get the Kindle2........ |
