Calibre Reader 4.1.0 Reference Mode?
I found the reference mode in previous versions of Calibre Reader very useful, but I can't find it anymore in the new version. Was it deprecated?

It not the same thing: reference mode is necessary for intellectual work! We must cite exactly where a citation is.

Your choices are pretty limited. You can either get a dead tree copy or a print replica AKA pdf edition. Otherwise any references are not going to be "exactly where a citation is".

You can see i.g. this and this . I don't understand why you dont't leave the possibility, (only) for people who want it (I mean: not shown by default), to keep this feature. |

In the old deadtree world you really needed an exact reference to find a citation in the cited work. In the electronic world we have a feature called Search. All you need to do is copy (part of) the citation to the Search field and there you are! I guess the intellectuals doing the intellectual work will sooner or later grasp this concept of Searching.

How can something that is worthless as a standard (Calibre is NOT a universal 'Standard', traceable thru weights and measures. ) have cost?

ADE shows page numbers from an ePub
It's not the EXACT cite, but it is a page number ADE is probably more 'universal' than Calibre's viewer anyway |

For the record, it wasn't a matter of "keeping" reference mode. The viewer was completely rewritten. There is probably no shared code between the old version and the new version. That means that it was a matter of implementing the mode from scratch. Kovid obviously didn't believe it was something useful. And, based on comments elsewhere about academic references (usually during the very "calm" discussions about page numbers), I didn't think it was something that would be used either.

Yeah I could re-implement reference mode in the new viewer, but I dont really see the point, its calibre specific and you dont want to make citations that depend on particular software to work. And if you really do want to do that, you can use the Go to->Location feature instead (although I admit that the locations are much messier looking than reference numbers).

I see
I see, @davidfor and @Kovid: I understand your point of view ...
My only problem is to have citations (from epub) acceptable in the academic field, and Oxford had sided with the ("classic", previous) reference mode of Calibre. But in fact my workaround indicated above (via css) seems even better to me, and somewhere it is said that we can cite chapter and paragraph as a reference in some way "absolute". So in effect it could be not so important or urgent to re-have "classic" reference mode ... |
