Calibre 4.4+ viewer can now have the toolbar
For all you who have not liked the Calibre 4.0 viewer because the toolbar was removed, you can now use the viewer from Calibre 4.4 as you can turn on the toolbar and even configure the toolbar.

So there's now no longer any reason to stop liking Calibre 4.4 or any version going forward.

But it is not exactly the same as the old viewer and I was not consulted about any changes before they were made so I could veto them.

The never-ending barrage of complaints, invective and at times ad hominem abuse poor Mr Goyal has had to endure after starting the 4.x series puts me in mind of Captain Picard: Since Calibre's source is available, I'm tempted to say to all who complain that the backdrop is exactly the wrong shade of pink in the late afternoon, "make it so."

But it was made clear in the version 4.3 and version 4.4 section of Calibre's What's New Change log. Every time someone clicks on the Get update button presented by calibre they are also presented with the new features link (see attached) to read what is new or has changed in the offered version. It is usually a good idea for users to investigate the changes before updating.

Are you truly claiming that calibre deleted the preferences keys which contained your previous viewing preferences?

Or are you hyperbolically claiming that just to make your complaint sound more impressive than it actually is?

In the latter case, downgrading to an old version of calibre would cause your old preferences to "reappear", thus proving that those settings were not deleted, but rather ignored. It would therefore be your prerogative to do like any update ever, and roll back to the previous version if you truly despise the new version.

Call me a dummy, but how do I get the 4.4 viewer? I really like the viewer in the 3.24+ releases. I miss the tools bar. I'd be happy to have that back, but failing that could someone tell how to get the 4.4 version working on my now new 4.7.0?

The toolbar is available in the 4.4 release OR LATER, so why do you want an earlier version than you already have?

It does for me. The toolbar is enabled via the preferences in the viewer, on the Miscellaneous page. There is also a button to customise the toolbar. There is probably a hot-key to show or hide the toolbar, but, as I never turn the toolbar off, I haven't bothered to learn it.

On my Windows 10 laptop, the viewer does take focus when it starts. At least it does when I don't do something else. I have a tendency to start it, and switch to the browser to look at something while it starts. In that case, it doesn't grab focus. And that is how I want it to work.

Now I'm seeing some light. MY edition of the viewer has NO tools. I tried side-loading lfrviewer.exe (from the Cablibre install directory) and it takes focus and has a toolbar. So I begin to think I have a bad install. I tried to repair the 4.4 install. Repair fails due to "Specified Account already exists". Strange, since this would probably ALWAYS have an existing account if one was merely trying to a do a repair!

Next I tried to install 3.48.0 but was told that I needed to uninstall 4.4. No problem, I think. Uninstall seem to work. Re-install fails with an "Already installed, must uninstall first" message.

Now I'm at a loss as to what to fo next. Any thoughts?

Just follow davidfor's directions to enable the toolbar in the viewer. According to your attached image you have 4.7 installed. Quit playing with version 4.4. In the viewer right click in the center of the page. Select Preferences - Miscellaneous - Check the box to Show a toolbar with the most useful actions.

Ctrl+F11 was added to toggle the viewer toolbar in one of the version 2 releases, it's been there ever since
