Still reading the Harry Potter. I've also started The Vanishing Box by Elly Griffiths. |

After reading the first five of Martin Walker's Bruno, Chief of Police series (4 excellent, 1 OK), I find myself with 40 days to read one book if I am to make my GR challenge for the year. Just enough time to try Le Petit Prince, peut-être.

Knowing absolutely nothing about what you like to read, I'm going to blindly suggest: A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson. I haven't met anyone who didn't enjoy that one at least a little bit. It has widespread general appeal across a wide range of audiences.

The Vanishing Box was most satisfactory. I'm looking forward to the next one, once it's dropped in price a bit. Next up: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Looking good so far. |

It's been a long while since I posted here, so a couple of recent standouts:
- Her Body and Other Parties, by Carmen Maria Machado: creeeepy unconventional 21st-century horror/fantasy/magical realism stories. This is nothing like Stephen King or the kinds of horror with lots of voyeuristic violence against women - it reminds me more of Kaaron Warren and Margo Lanagan in her more horror-ish modes. Incredibly well written, but not for the faint-hearted (or those who don't want any on-page sex). Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: Escapist happy M/M romance between the First Son of the USA and the Royal Spare Prince of the UK. Just fun and joyful and thoroughly enjoyable. Keep Calm & Kill The Chef by Livia Day: Third in a cosy mystery series set in Hobart café world. Again, just fun. I've been in the mood for a lot of that lately. Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell: Autumn-themed YA graphic novel. Adorable. A Single Stone by Meg McKinlay: technically YA but definitely crossover fantasy. Teams of deliberately-stunted young girls for teams to crawl into the mountain for harvest. But there are dark secrets to uncover. One of my best books of the year. |

Reading the third book (Fire) of the Elements of Horror anthologies from Red Cape Publishing. These just get better and better (if you like Horror). One of the stories left me just staring at the wall for a while after.

And it was indeed a most enjoyable fantasy. I'm looking forward to getting and reading the other two in the trilogy eventually.
Then I read Sharpe's Siege by Bernard Cornwell. As expected, an excellent adventure. And now I'm starting on The Man Who Played With Fire by Jan Stocklassa. This is a non-fiction book about Stieg Larsson's investigation into the 1986 assassination of Olof Palme, the Swedish Prime Minister. A bit of a change of pace from my usual SF/Fantasy/Historical Fiction fare. |

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Although I'm reading it for a class assignment it's quite good. I never got into this genre before, I tried reading Frankenstein but gave up on it after a few pages. This story is low key and plot moves along nicely due to the psychological drama going on and not so much due to monster stuff happenings.

I've started Sharpe's Waterloo. Only one more to go after this. Even though all the books are the same, they are excellent and reliable entertainment and I shall be sorry to see the last of them.

Read Night Train to Rigel by Timothy Zahn. A book purchased in 2017!
An interstellar mystery on a train moving through space. Interesting plot. Animal-like aliens. Overall, an enjoyable space opera. Just enough tech without boring this reader and enough clues to work out the villains. Rated C+ [3 stars]. |

Now reading the Dreamtime Damsels & Fatal Femmes anthology (I seem to be reading a lot of short stories recently). Some of the stories are excellent while others, not so much. All of them about strong female protagonists.
Planning to start All the Weyrs of Pern soon. It's one I've not read. |
