I, for one, have not noticed Amazon's search engine getting worse, and I've been a customer since the days in the late 1990's, when Amazon was just a bookstore. The one exception is the sorting/filtering by price feature. It definitely seems to have gotten worse--the results of a search by price, now, seem almost to have no bearing on what you ask their search engine to do.
In Amazon's case, I believe publishers are paying for top status. Search on a title and get pages of unrelated stuff in a different genre with none of the search words involved because a publisher wants to sell me Romance. Gits.

I gave two examples above of search by title working fine. Please give counter-examples. also state whether top-of-the page one-box general search or advanced (box for title) search is meant.

Great post, as usual.

Be aware that the first book may actually be about TWA Airlines, rather than Alaska Airlines. Read the reviews that go along with the "1" and "2" ratings at Amazon and GoodReads.

The author of both books is Robert J. Serling.

I followed the link that you gave above and downloaded the book that is on the webpage, but haven't taken the time to open it up to see whether I'm going to learn about Alaska or TWA.

Strangely, several reviewers made no comment about the books getting mixed up.

If I had my druthers, I'd much rather read about the storied history of TWA than about Alaskan Airlines.

The book I downloaded was definitely about Alaska Airlines

Howard Hughes' Airline: An Informal History of TWA would be the book that was mixed up with it last year?

I did a search for "Character and Characters" from the general Kindle search. I didn't see the book at all (gave up about 10-20 pages in). Ditto for advanced Kindle search. I searched for "Character and Characters Serling" from the general Kindle search and it showed up at the bottom of the second page. Using the Title and Author fields made the paper book the first entry and the Kindle book the second entry.

This is not the first time I have had such results.

The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert is on sale at Amazon today for $3.99
https://www.amazon.com/Sixth-Extinct...dp/B00EGJE4G2/

I happen to be reading this now and am about 25% in and really enjoying the reading, if not the general direction of current events. Although the focus is on the extinction event now in progress, the prior mass extinctions are also covered.

The Exodus by Richard Friedman is $1.99 at Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9J8BY2/
Quote:
Biblical scholars, Egyptologists, archaeologists, historians, literary scholars, anthropologists, and filmmakers are drawn to the mystery of the exodus. Unable to find physical evidence until now, many archaeologists and scholars claim this mass migration is just a story, not history. Others oppose this conclusion, defending the biblical account.

Like a detective on an intricate case no one has yet solved, pioneering Bible scholar and best-selling author of Who Wrote the Bible? Richard Elliott Friedman cuts through the noise—the serious studies and the wild theories—merging new findings with new insight. From a spectrum of disciplines, state-of-the-art archaeological breakthroughs, and fresh discoveries within scripture, he brings real evidence of a historical basis for the exodus—the history behind the story. The biblical account of millions fleeing Egypt may be an exaggeration, but the exodus itself is not a myth.

Friedman does not stop there. Known for his ability to make Bible scholarship accessible to readers, Friedman proceeds to reveal how much is at stake when we explore the historicity of the exodus. The implications, he writes, are monumental. We learn that it became the starting point of the formation of monotheism, the defining concept of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Moreover, we learn that it precipitated the foundational ethic of loving one’s neighbors—including strangers—as oneself. He concludes, the actual exodus was the cradle of global values of compassion and equal rights today.

Examples are easy. Ok top bar, specifying books, Search "Force of Chaos".
Results in order given:

Masters of Chaos: The Secret History of the Special Forces

Fatal Chaos

Marie Force The Fatal Series Volume 1: An Anthology

If Chaos Reigns: The Near-Disaster and Ultimate Triumph of the Allied Airborne Forces on D-Day, June 6, 1944

The Eternal Conflict: The complete unified theory of physics based on the universal duality and the inherent conflict between the primary force of Chaos and the primary force of Order

The Ruins: A Black Force Thriller (Black Force Shorts Book 10)

Beloved Chaos: moving from religion to Love in a red light district

Forces of Chaos (Yay! It's close...)

Hard Case 12: Climate of Chaos (John Harding)

Command Culture: Officer Education in the U.S. Army and the German Armed Forces, 1901-1940, and the Consequences for World War II

Life Force: Sensed energy in breathwork, psychedelia and chaos magic

Haunted by Chaos: China’s Grand Strategy from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping

and so on.

Advanced search? Okay, search on title, looks much the same. But to be fair the exact tile match come up after 15 others that don't.

Very poor.

After reading about the problems with book searches I tried the Amazon advanced search for the first time.

Using the search term "force of chaos" (including the quotes) in the book title field resulted in only 3 books, two of them with the term in the title or the subtitle and the third one (shown first) with the plural term Forces of Chaos.

For the example that Fluribus gave above, in the general Kindle search using the terms "character and characters" serling (with quotes as shown) only resulted in the one correct Kindle book and the one correct hardcover book.

The same result was achieved in the advanced search using "character and characters" (with quotes) as the title and serling as the author, except that only the Kindle version was shown.

Perhaps it's not well known that quotes can be used in this manner, both on Amazon and in a Google search.
