this is a bad news, it means that Onyx has created an hybrid firmware with backported apps (from a real v1.9.1) to an old android (4.0.4 instead of the standrad for new models, 6.0)

This explain the absence of playstore app and put this new firmware on a dead end.

Wifi, browsers and others apps that using HTTPS (like RSS feed reader) became quickly useless because CA certificates expires and old SSL standards where deprecated

Ok, I made the BIG mistake to install the last firmware on my Onyx M96. Now I lost Google Play, the "note" App is slower and with more bug than before, I have no more the OnyxReader and I have not improvement on previous limitations with android App.

Do you know if I can install the older 1.8.2 version? In the release note of 1.9.1 I read: "1.9.1 The data structure has changed. After upgrading, it cannot be downgraded, otherwise the reader will not be able to open;". So it seems a "no" to me.

Do you know if Booxtor is working for a local version of 1.9.1 with OnyxReader and Google Play?

If it's not an M96C or M96C+ I put up a couple of firmwares for M96 & M96+. I have the ealier Kitkat (4.4) installed on mine, but I tend not to use the Onyx apps so it might be the later Kitkat or Ice Cream (4.0) would be better for you. At any rate, the installers are executable files you run from your computer, not from the device.

I've asked the same question regarding firmware 1.9.1 for Boox i86ML Plus. The answer I've received was

It works!

By the "T68_ICS_2017-05-03_05-49_1.8.2_e54efe5_user_1.8.2.zip" file it's possible to restore the firmware 1.8.2 in the T68. Replacing the files in "T68_2017-05-03_05-49_1.8.2_e54efe5_user\Profiles\MX6SL Linux Update\OS Firmware\files\android" folder with those in the last T76PLus firmware it's possibile to restore the Onyx T76Plus as well. In the latter case after the MfgTools2 tool I advice to restore the T76Plus firmware a second time by normal way. The MfgTools2 tool works only "as Administator" and if the device is in "download mode".

I'm not able to install... it seems I have to install ad ADB driver on my computer, but I do not know where find it.

Thank you for the answer: I have the MFG Tool Pack, but I'm not able to find the tool to install the ADB driver...

I don't know why you needed ADB driver to use MFG Tool Pack. Just reboot in download mode like told in instruction:
1. MFG Tool work on Windows PC only. It must not be installed. Just download the package, unzip it in a folder.
2. Connect your device to your PC (if possible don’t use USB 3.0 ports). Power off it (long press on power button) and start MfgTool2.exe from unzipped folder
3. You must set your Boox in download mode now. Just re-boot your device in this mode using a special buttons combination: Press PgDn (<) + PgUp (>) + power button for 3-4 seconds. The led blinks once but screen remains unchanged. Your device is in download mode now and MFG program window should report HID compliant device connected.
4. Press start button and wait for your update being installed.
I just checked it - it don't use ADB.
But if you insist - that ADB I use with MAX https://yadi.sk/d/VCj3pC4vCUTCfw.
