I agree that the Sony did a very nice job of rendering fonts. Especially now that I've "figured out" (read information found here) how to adjust the contrast of Sony's fonts. I still like my Sony readers. I wish they were still making them.

I can't resist pointing out that the Nook STR cost $99 and had Wi-Fi, while the Sony PRS-650 cost $229 and didn't have Wi-Fi. They had to give you something for that extra $130!

Related to that..

Am I the only one who finds basically all of the current mid-high end e-readers to be really overpriced for what they are in terms of hardware?

No, you're not. I much prefer reading on an e-reader to my phone, but when a Forma cost 80% of the price of my very reasonably spec'd Android phone, not buying one is an absolute no-brainer.

Could you imagine if Apple ever made an e-reader?

It would be like $499 and so thin and non-ergonomic that you'd need tweezers to hold it

Not really. The high-end eink readers are luxury items and priced accordingly. You can alway buy a lower-tier reader or read on a tablet.

The luxury items aren't priced by any rational principle or logic, but what people are willing to pay for them. Apparently there are enough customers willing to cough up money for a high-end reader. I have to admit I'm one of them. Would I buy a Lamborghini? Never, even if I had that kind of money (which I don't). Cars just don't interest me enough. Would I buy a Kindle Oasis? Yes, because I want that reading experience the Oasis would give. Would I buy a high-end laptop? Again yes, because what I get with an expensive laptop is important to me. Would I buy a 600$ smartphone? No, because the absolutely best phone experience isn't a priority for me. I'm perfectly content with mid-tier phones.

So it all comes down to what your priorities are and whether that high-end experience is important to you.

@sirtel

You're talking about whether there's a market for it or not, which is a different question and I don't dispute your conclusion at all.

I just think, objectively, on the hardware they ship with and/or consist of, they are overpriced quite a bit.

And then with the Forma in particular, we get into the quality control realm also, which is an area I find it lacking given it is the high priced, premium model.

Objectively, all luxury items are grossly overpriced.

The #1 reason I bought my Kobo was because I wanted a new reader that could get Overdrive library books directly when I didn't have access to my home computer. Overdrive changes made it no longer possible to get library books directly on my Sony PRS-T3. If I had wanted to sideload my library books I could have just kept using the Sony.

Now (thanks to rcentros) I use a cheap used Tolino as my away-from-home reader instead of the Kobo, because not only can the Tolino get any library book (not just the ones that match the Kobo store) but it also has the Adobe page numbers.

The comfort light on the Kobo is good for reading in bed so do I use it for that.

I guess I hesitate to call any of these e-readers "luxury", but to each our own on that I suppose.

Luxury just means something different and far more exorbitant to me than anything any of these e-readers comes close to.

Yes, but KePubs seem to have the features you want.

Certainly luxury means something different for everyone. Personally, I consider high-end electronics luxury items, but I'm sure a millionaire wouldn't. And for many people probably even the cheapest laptop is a luxury item.

Don't be ridiculous! The tweezers come free with the ebook reader, along with the new JonCase™ made out of steel.

No, $999.
It would be perfectly ergonomic as long as you hold it properly.
It would need charged x4 more often due to the thin alloy case, but no tweezers required.
The corners would be rounder, like the older Nook, who they'd sue.
It would have no sockets or buttons at all. A special touch gesture would wake it and it would charge from a mat. Which isn't cordless charging as the mat needs a cord and PSU. The 32 G Byte version would be an extra $100 over the 8 G Byte version (or is the Apple premium for Flash memory chips more than that?).
It would be waterproof due to the lack of buttons or connectors and the fact that it can't be opened at all. (See latest Apple ear bud battery replacement).
You'd also need the Apple Mac / PC /iOS store/cloud utility to download approved content. No sideloading / USB, which is almost true of iOS based gadgets. No way to put MP3s on an iPad / iPhone / iPod since ages without Apple software running on the PC/Mac for Apple Applications. Hard luck trying to install any 3rd party app on an iPhone 4s, though you can on older Android stuff.
