2061: Odyssey Three by Arthur C. Clarke is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
The third book in Clarke’s beloved Space Odyssey continues the story of Heywood Floyd, survivor of two previous encounters with the mysterious monoliths and the alien intelligences behind them. Floyd is chosen as one of a handful of celebrity guests to witness the first manned touchdown on the surface of Halley’s Comet on the privately-owned spaceship Universe.

But on Jupiter’s moon Europa, scientists have spotted the sudden appearance of a single diamond the size of a mountain—a fragment of Jupiter’s core. When the spaceship Galaxy is hijacked and forced to crash into Europa’s ocean, the Universe is diverted from its original mission to rescue the crew.

Now Heywood Floyd must once again survive an encounter with HAL, David Bowman, and the mysterious monolith-building race with its own inscrutable agenda to shape the destiny of the human race.

I'm deeply glad I already own all four books, otherwise I would've been saddened to have missed this sale...

The Book of Years Series - Peter Morwood

Omnibus of The Horse Lord, The Demon Lord and The Dragon Lord. Books 1 and 3 have definitely been free in the past. First time I remember seeing the whole lot being given away in one go, though.

amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca

Spoiler:
The Horse Lord

Aldric Talvalin has had his family torn from him and is left for dead.

Seeking the care of an old wizard, Gemmel, he is nursed back to health. But as recompense, he has a particular mission in mind for the hero.

Alone, he ventures off through dangerous lands in discovery of the legendary Dragonwand, a powerful tool and weapon long sought after by Gemmel.

Trouble, danger, and even romance face Aldric on his perilous adventure.

And the question remains:

Will he succeed in his vengeful purpose?

The Demon Lord

Aldric Talvalin, young clan lord of the country of Alba, has beeen summoned to complete another quest.

It has taken Aldric Talvalin four years of his life to achieve a fitting revenge on the slayers of his family; and now life has lost its direction, its purpose, and even its first love.

He decides to leave the newly won citadel of Dunrath, his lost birthright, and his wanderings bring him to the ominous border provinces of the troubled Drusalan Empire.

Demon Queller - There in the forests of the Jevaiden plateau, Aldric meets Evthan the hunter and his beautiful niece, and learns that she, too is the lost heir to a stolen citadel.

Together they set out to the fortress of Seghar to quell the demon spirit that possesses it and to turn back into Outer Darkness forever the evil power of the god turned devil Issaqua.

The Dragon Lord

In the service of the crook-shouldered King Rynert, Aldric has been dishonoured and sold into the Drusalan Empire in an example of Machiavellian statecraft.

Here in the hated Empire, he lies at the mercy of those who have loathed him and all he stands for, for generations.

But Aldric is a High-Clan Lord, skilled in the art of the sword, a scholar and an expert in Art Matic, a warrior who has seen the best and seen the worst.

And even in the Drusalan Empire there are allies which include Ymareth, The Dragon.

Thanks for that. I have several Peter Morwood books, all picked up for free.

I wish when they do these 'box sets' they wouldn't use the isometric 'cover and spines' as the book cover. Maybe it looks good in the store, but it looks like crap on the reader.

Sigh. The Morwood omnibus is a Kindle exclusive. I object to Kindle exclusives on principle. I think I'll ignore my dislike though and pick it up; I'm a fan of his wife's work (Diane Duane) and I've been curious about Morwood's work for a while now.

If you use Calibre you can fix that. Change the cover in Calibre, then convert the book into the same format. It'll replace the crappy cover with the one you selected. I do this for any books that have covers I dislike. Sometimes I'll use scans of much older covers that were actually interesting instead of plain, boring re-release ones.

The conversion step isn’t necessary. As long as you use calibre’s metadata-update window to change the cover, it’ll take care of that detail for you. (At least, it CAN. There might be a setting that needs tweaked.)

Some formats require the conversion process, though with ePub and AZW3 you can use the metadata-update functions in calibre to "inject" a new replacement cover without having to do a conversion.

I use Calibre, but that only works if The Book of Years Omnibus has an alternate cover available. As often as not, there isn't one.

I do Photoshop work as my day job so for me it's an easy task to edit the oblique front cover of boxed sets like this. I usually, though, chop the boxed set into separate ebook files and put the easily findable individual covers on each. I leave the "ugly" oblique box "cover" on the original that I also keep.

email me at dwig (at) happythursday (dot) com and I'll send you a "fixed" cover for the boxed set.

I usually use calibre to split up omnibuses into separate books and download covers for them. This one looks like it will be a challenge - internally, the entire omnibus is one big html file, with a minimal style sheet and all in-line formatting.

Yeah, that can be a challenge. A few good searches should help build that stylesheet, though, and doesn’t calibre have an option somewhere to automagically convert inline styles to stylesheet rules on an EPUB-to-EPUB conversion?
