OT, but...If you read at home, what about an echo dot?
I personally can't do without it anymore, if I think of something I just have to tell to Alexa and I find it synchronized on my phone.
I say Alexa and not Google because I have both and I find Alexa better for the lists.

If you have a smartphone (I'm not sure whether you do?) it seems like it would be simpler to use the phone for your "remember eggs & cheese" type of notes. There are plenty of shopping list apps available. The Google Keep app works well for checklist/reminders.

469, I do have a smartphone, and I do use Keep for lists and reminders and notes.
But what I wanted to avoid was reaching for my phone to create a note on Keep, and then getting distracted with other things on the phone (other apps/internet). This is one major reason I'm happy with the Kobo Forma. It's a dedicated reading device.

That's why I would suggest an echo dot

perisiana,
Unfortunately, for my current situation, an echo or other home devices don't work.

Honestly the sketch pad is going to be a frustrating thing to try and use for this purpose because it’s not designed to be used this way. If I recall correctly it just turns your screen into a blank slate and lets you doodle with a finger.

I’m sure android has something that lets you record notes by speaking to the phone both as an audio recording and also as text. Why try to repurpose the Forma to do something it wasn’t designed to do when you already have a better tool for the task.

A phone is better for the task, but, because of my weakness, I'd like to avoid the temptation to handle a timesink.
Anyway, the sktechpad is good for quick things I want to remember. Like I can just scribble

"Call Susie"
or
"Apply for ____"
or
"File taxes"

Here's what I have just started doing. I do not ever use annotations and haven't found a way to turn them off. What I do is to create an annotation on the first page of whatever book I am currently reading and add a note to it. I use this as a scratch pad to add whatever I need to get at the grocery store or task that needs to get done, appointment reminder etc. You can always edit the annotation to add/remove items. Works well for me as I read in bed then handle the notes the next morning and clear the note and start over.

How do you "handle the notes the next morning"?
How do you remember which book has the notes?

Are you really reading that many books that the next day you wouldn't remember? Or, find it quickly using the "Recent" sort? And if you long press on the book, it will show a menu with an "Annotations" item if the book has annotations.
