@titanshadow: It just isn't going to work. The per screen page count isn't just the font size. If it was, then it would probably be possible to calculate pages based on this and a page size. But, the books also have styles. Throw a scene break with a graphic in it and you suddenly have less words and lines on the page. You would probably have to render the full book at a particular screen size, resolution and font size to get the page count. And even that isn't enough as each epub reader app or handles the HTML and CSS in slightly different ways. Some are actually bugs, but very often it is different interpretations of the standards and all of them are right.

I'd go with @theducks suggestions. The Adobe page counts are the most common. But, add that you can update the comments using a plugboard. I add page count and word count to my books this way when sending them to my devices.

The alternative is to use a different app. There should be an ereader app that uses the Adobe RMSDK and will show page the counts.

It's probably a pity that no app shows the word count instead of the page count. Though that gets into the argument about what a word is. I'm not going there again.

That means you have the plugin configured to download the page count from a supported site. But, the book does not have an identifier for one of the sites. You either need to add the identifier for the book on the site (use the appropriate metadata source plugin) or change plugin to calculate the count from the book.

Here is what I found when I had the same basic problem. This is extracted from my previous post earlier this year and maybe you have the same problem:

So in case this helps anyone else, here is a summary of my particular issue.

I believe I took all the defaults on Page Count. And since I already had the necessary extra columns and tags for the fields I thought I was ready to go. The Page count was set to go to the custom column #pages using the algorithm Adobe Digital Editions; and word count was to go to #words and use the ICU algorithm (whatever that is).

My big mistake was on the "Other" tab for customizing Count Pages. It was defaulting to download from both Goodreads and lubimyczytac.pl. Unchecking those on the Download options fixed my problem. What was happening was, since I had Goodreads checked (e.g.), Page Count needed to find an Goodreads "ID" for each book I was trying to count. None of my books had that, so the Page Count would fail.

What is it you want to do? If you want to download the page counts from one of the available sites, you select them on the Other tab, set the "Button default" to the appropriate site option and make sure the books have an identifier for the site you want to use. The clicking the count pages button will download the page counts for you.

If you want to do the count based on the format in your library, you probably want to set "Button default" to "Estimate page/word counts". The clicking the button will run job to do the counts on the selected books.

With either setting of the "Button default", you can use the menu to run the other way.

Would it be possible to add a feature that calculates progress within this plugin? I'm thinking the addition of two extra custom columns -- one in which a user manually enters their #currentpage & one that spits out a #percentcomplete after dividing #currentpage by the generated #pagecount -- could solve some problems for folks whose devices don't track reading progress.

You can do that with a custom column. Create a column of type "Column built from other columns". Set the template to something like:

Code:
{:'divide(raw_field("#currentpage "),raw_field("#pagecount "))'}
You can format this with:

Code:
{:'format_number(divide(raw_field("#currentpage "),raw_field("#pagecount ")),"5.2f")'}

What i really want is something similar to what the Kindle has i.e. when in 'My books' it would be great to see an indication there of how long the book is preferably by page numbers in the list of books.

Is this possible with this plug in?

Nice! I thought as much, but ran into some difficultly, so thanks for the walkthrough. This was the last thing I needed to replace Goodreads

Thanks for the plugin!

Many thanks for this plugin - it's a great tool for comparison. I have a couple of questions, and I apologise if I've missed an existing answer:
  • How does the ADE algorithm actually work? What does it take into account?
  • Would it be possible to have the plugin queue separate jobs for each book, so that it's easier to see progress?
  • Is there any option to queue a word count job automatically when a book is imported?

The originator of this plugin is no longer active, so its unlikely it will be enhanced in any significant way, I've written some 'answers' in line in Dark Red.

    See https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Page_numbers

    I doubt it, unless you do it

  • Is there any option to queue a word count job automatically when a book is imported?

    No, it would have to be rewritten as a File Type plugin to do that.

For details of the ADE algorithm, see https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/ADE#Page_numbers. It is mainly interesting as anything that uses the Adobe RMSDK to read epubs will use it.

For the rest, as BR said, the plugins author is no longer around. I have done some maintenance as needed, but, neither of these are something I am interested in doing. If you want them, you would probably need to do them yourself. Neither should be to hard hard to. The latter could probably be implemented as a filetype plugin that started the page count.
