Upgraded to Calibre 4 and all my book covers are gone.

The title says it all.

All my covers have this generic blue cover now.

There have been no changes to cover handling in v4. Are the cover.jpg files still in the folders? Check by selecting a book and pressing O

I checked several of my books.

All of them have a file called "cover.jpg" which is in fact the book cover.

Still seeing nothing but those blue generic covers inside of Calibre as per my screenshot above.

Again this happened after I upgraded to 4.0

I didn't add nor delete any plug-in's etc. just did the update.

Maybe it's a conflict with one of the plug-in's I have (I do have a few installed just haven't changed any of them lately)?

Dont see anything suspicious in that, does it still happen if you run calibre from a command prompt as

calibre --ignore-plugins

And what happens if you manually set the cover for a book, does it show up subsequently?

The same thing happens if I load the program using the command prompt. In other words no change.

I did notice that my install path is this ---> C:\Program Files\Calibre2

Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Should it read 2 at the end? Note that I never did any change during or after installing so that's where it put it.

Another thing:

If I RIGHT CLICK on the BLUE GENERIC COVER and select "Open cover with..." then the cover opens up (I'm using IrfanView which is the program I use for opening images). Maybe this is because the "cover.jpg" images are in the folder with the ebook files?

But wait... it gets stranger.

When I go into the "Edit Metadata" and select "Download" for the cover it searches the net (Amazon, Kobo, Etc.) and then stops after a while finding nothing. I did this with 3 books and it did it with all of them, including one where I know I originally pulled the cover down from an online source. I've not seen this behavior before.

And maybe this is normal behavior? ... But when I try to manually select a JPG cover (using Change Cover: Browse in the Edit Metadata dialog) it says that it is not a valid format. Seems it wants a BMP or PNG or a few other formats (which are listed) but JPG isn't an option there.

it looks like the jpeg image plugin in your install is corrupted. Do a clean re-install and you should be fine.

I remember doing that @BetterRed and my choices were very limited. Not like your choice options.

@kovidgoyal I will redownload the 4.0 install file and try a fresh install.

I did a fresh download of Calibre 4.0 and installed over the old one using the REPAIR function.

No change.

I then uninstalled Calibre 4.0 and rebooted the computer then did a fresh install.

Still no change.

By the way this is what I see when I try to manually set the cover:

You are trying to set a cover from within the Library??
I don't think that is allowed. First of all, if there was a cover.jpg(in that folder), you would have a cover shown in Calibre GUI.

That's really weird. There are various filters for file type - the one being used looks like it's called "Images" - I have no idea where or how they're defined. Add Books uses one called "Books".

Hopefully it will give Kovid a clue

All of them have a file called "cover.jpg" which is in fact the book cover. Still seeing nothing but those blue generic covers inside of Calibre as per my screenshot above. Again this happened after I upgraded to 4.0 I didn't add nor delete any plug-in's etc. just did the update. Maybe it's a conflict with one of the plug-in's I have (I do have a few installed just haven't changed any of them lately)?
