I know books often go on a never ending TBR list, but I'd recommend reading Dark Harvest soon. Not because you're missing a modern day classic, but because it is a perfect read for October (and it is short).

Norman Partridge has some other books available that are much cheaper than Dark Harvest. I liked Dark Harvest enough to immediately buy the others. He has a collection of October-themed short stories called Johnny Halloween: Tales of the Dark Season. I think I'll give that a read this month.

Gretel by Christopher Coleman is FREE at Amazon US.

I've purchased a couple of Christopher Coleman books before (They Came With The Snow and The Sighting) but I have not read them yet.

Quote:
There is an ancient evil in the Back Country, dormant for centuries but now hungry and lurking.

When it sets its sights on an unsuspecting mother one routine morning along an isolated stretch of highway, a quiet farming family is suddenly thrust into a world of unspeakable terror, and a young Gretel must learn to be a hero.

Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti is $1.99 at Amazon.

I've heard lots and lots of good stuff about Thomas Ligotti, but I only remember reading one of his stories and memories are hazy.

Quote:
Two terrifying classics by “the best kept secret in contemporary horror fiction” (The Washington Post)

Thomas Ligotti’s debut collection, Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and his second, Grimscribe, permanently inscribed a new name in the pantheon of horror fiction. Influenced by the strange terrors of Lovecraft and Poe and by the brutal absurdity of Kafka, Ligotti eschews cheap, gory thrills for his own brand of horror, which shocks at the deepest, existential, levels.

Ligotti’s stories take on decaying cities and lurid dreamscapes in a style ranging from rich, ornamental prose to cold, clinical detachment. His raw and experimental work lays bare the unimportance of our world and the sickening madness of the human condition. Like the greatest writers of cosmic horror, Ligotti bends reality until it cracks, opening fissures through which he invites us to gaze on the unsettling darkness of the abyss below.

Ligotti is an absolute genius of the Horror genre.

I would have to say that he is my favorite horror writer.

Thanks for further info on this author.

I have to finish (first) "Fury of the Tomb," by S.A. Sidor and then (second) Vol. 6 of the WONDERFUL anthology series, "The Wimbourne Book of Victorian Ghost Stories." Here's the link for these. Notice the great prices:

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=wimbourne...b_sb_ss_c_2_28

Then comes Norman Partridge - but in time for Halloween.

Fury of the Tomb has been on my TBR since I stumbled across it in Powell's Books in Oregon. I picked up an e-copy on sale. How is it?

I'll check out the Wimbourne books.

I'll check out the Wimbourne books.

I'm enjoying the hell out of it. He's a kind of Cabellian anti-hero, with snide remarks thrown in. And a wonderful female character has just been introduced. I'm about 1/3 into the book right now.

There's a second book in the series. If this first one continues to be an entertaining and engaging read, then I will assuredly buy that other volume.

A book that was shared here before, but I missed the sale:

The Rib From Which I Remake the World by Ed Kurtz is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
As World War II rages across Europe, a small Arkansas town is abuzz with the arrival of a travelling hygiene show. Ex-cop George “Jojo” Walker, now the Litchfield Valley Hotel’s house detective, is mostly concerned with maintaining the status quo. But nothing will ever be normal in Litchfield again once locals start viewing the peculiar travelling show.

What begins with a gruesome and impossible murder soon spirals into hallucinatory waking nightmares for Jojo—nightmares that converge with his reality and dredge up his painful, secret past. Black magic and a terrifying Luciferian carnival boil up to a surreal finale for the town of Litchfield, when truth itself unfurls and Jojo Walker is forced to face his own identity in ways he could never have expected.

Another book I've shared before. $0.99 is a good price.

The Harvest by Scott Nicholson is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
An infection that consumes and changes people...

When an alien entity lands in the remote Appalachian Mountains, a clairvoyant psychology professor, a drunken dirt farmer, and a disillusioned tycoon must team up to stop it before the infection spreads.

But with Windshake's annual spring festival coming, the town is full of visitors, unaware of the unnatural menace creeping toward them from the woods...

Doorbells at Dusk: Halloween Stories by Various Authors
Amazon US $0.99

Doorbells at Dusk is a treasury of brand-new Halloween tales from both modern masters and rising stars of dark fiction, horror and suspense.

Halloween has always gone hand-in-hand with horror. The holiday gives many children their first taste of terror, the discovery and overcoming of fears. For those who find they love a good scare, that first taste can grow into a voracious appetite.

That might be why you’re looking at this book right now. If so, you’ve come to the right place.
These are the thrills you crave, packed into a collection that’s pure Halloween.
Featuring stories by:

Sean Eads
Amber Fallon
Charles Gramlich
Joanna Koch
Curtis M. Lawson
Lisa Lepovetsky
Adam Light
Evans Light
Chad Lutzke
Josh Malerman
Jason Parent
