ebooks don't have pages. Page number displays are an artifact of skeuomorphic UI design. They're misguided attempts at making ebooks behave just like physical books when we all know the greatest benefits of ebooks is how they don't behave just like physical books.

It also doesn’t mean they can’t follow suite.

Nothing you’ve said alters the fact that in ebooks there is no reason for page numbers to be at the bottom. I’d also point out that for a time the adobe page number option on Kobo readers put the page numbers on the side of the screen in ePub so you should be very familiar with that. I’m not sure if it still happens with newer firmware since I’ve long ago given up on ePub and use kepubs, it’s also one of the first options I disable and patch to the invert screen option instead. However that means even for ereaders you’re factually wrong about the page numbers always being at the bottom.

I’d agree with this actually. I remove the header and footer and stretch the text of the book to as near the edge of the screen as I can get it.

However I recognize that is my preference and others may not share it, we can already customize so much about our digital reading experience why not fully embrace it?

They have always been at the bottom. That's not wrong. But yes, early versions of ADE ALSO had page numbers at the side and that was removed in most cases. There is no RMSDK (ADE) at 2.0.1 or later that has the page numbers mandatory at the side. But with Kobo, there is an option to display the page numbers on the side or not (which is why I said most). Not is the default.

I would not mind having more options for the header/footer. But it's not wrong (given that we don't have such options) to keep the page number for the entire eBook at the bottom (like it's always been done).

Jon you initially said page numbers have always been at the bottom, I proved you were wrong. Then you tried to claim you were right about page numbers in ereaders being at the bottom, I again proved you wrong since Kobo had an option that displayed them on the side. Stop moving the goal post and simply admit you are wrong on this issue.

Psst it’s not always been done even in ereaders. It’s also not been an issue of whether it’s wrong or right for Kobo to put the page numbers where they have. The only thing that was being discussed was whether or not page numbers had to be at the bottom of the screen. The answer is they don’t.

Because choice increases complexity and too much complexity is bad in a user interface.

Except as they’re named currently there’s no indication to the user where the information will display until after they’ve changed the setting. It would have been simpler to have the options as ‘Display in Header’ and ‘Display in Footer’ then have seven options (chapter page number/percent read/Time remaining, the same for book, and off). This tells the user right away where the info will be displayed and what will be displayed.

My Aura received the update sometime yesterday evening, and it's left me with a problem. The book I was i the course of reading when it updated now won't open.

It is a very large book (it's an omnibus of 560 crime stories) but it's not been a problem until now. I'm reading it as a Kepub, downloaded from Kobo - it's not been imported into Calibre or anything.

Initial symptoms: tap on book over to open it, ereader opens the book at a page close to where I stopped reading. However it is entirely unresponsive - the only way out (after leaving it for a few minutes) is to power off and restart.

I've tried signing out and in, and now when I try to open the book I get a progress bar showing no actual progress, then after a minute or so the ereader drops back to the home page.

My next likely step is to import the book into Calibre, make a minor modification somewhere, then sideload it as a new book onto the Kobo and see if that helps.

I can't do that for the next hour or so, though; has anyone any other advice before I try that?

We are not talking about the side page numbers of ADE. We are talking about page numbers fo the book at the bottom. When the PRS-500 was released, there was no such thing as ADE and the page numbers were ONLY on he bottom. The page numbers have been on the bottom and still are. I am not wrong and you are not correct. So give up and realize your wrong. eBook Readers are not pBook and have been doing things differently for at least 7 years as the PRS-500 was released on October 2, 2007.

The page numbers work best at the bottom. Many people are used to it that way and to change it now would not be a good idea.

Is there a way to stop autoupdates of the FW.
Kobo asked to update, I said no. Next reboot bam.
Gladly patches are out (thanks devs) but if this happens on vacation or some professional trip I'm screwd.

I apply a patch (I think it has been "unsafe" for more than two years) that blocks the update even if wifi is on. You can check it.

Yes, keep WiFi off so you cannot sync. It's what I do because I have no need to sync. I download my Kobo purchases as ePub, put them in Calibre and go from there.

There's a libnickel patch to make the Kobo confirm before installing an upgrade.
