Updating TOC

Hey all,

I just deleted four chapters from my book and wanted to update the table of contents.

Should I manually edit the TOC or is there a way to automatically update the TOC?

Tools -> Table of contents - Generate ToC

This only works if you used a proper heading (h1..h6) set.

All the proper headings are there (epub file was done by a professional I hired). The TOC were already generated previously.

I deleted four chapters, then did like you said and generated the TOC again, but it remained the same as before with the four chapters I deleted still in the TOC.

Thats pretty much why I'm posting because it doesn't seem to be updating the TOC. So I assumed I was doing it wrong...

Do I have to delete the old TOC and re-do it? Ie, I can't just update the TOC like in Word?

Is this the toc.ncx, the nav.xhtml, or another html table of contents? If the latter, and epub2, the opf guide must explicitly include a toc element for Sigil to even know you have a separate html table of contents file Otherwise it will not be touched.

If epub2, open the content.opf tab and look for a toc entry in the guide element. The toc.ncx should automagically get updated when deleting resources after updating the toc.

If epub3, the true nav should be automagically updated if you have the proper manifest property nav set for that file.

There is neither correlation nor causality between these two things.

Its an ePub 2 file and when I check the toc.ncx file its not being updated. Its still showing the four chapters I deleted.

- I opened my pub file... went to each chapter under book browser and deleted the four I need gone.

- Then I did Tools > TOC > Generate TOC

When the preview window opens up to generate the TOC, it doesn't show the chapters I deleted and everything looks good. I click "ok" and then view the top.ncx file, but it still shows the four chapters I deleted for some reason.

True, but the headings are there, I double checked to be sure.

Did you check your content.opf file and verify if the html table of contents has been listed in the guide as a "toc"?

I grabbed an epub2, that has a toc.ncx and an html table of contents that is listed in the opf guide as a toc.

I then deleted a bunch of chapters. And used Generate Table of Contents, and the deleted chapters are no longer in the toc.ncx, looking at it in the Tabbed area showed it was correctly updated, as did the updated Table Of Contents dockable window. See the Views menu item to enable disable it.

My separate html table of contents did not get rebuilt because I did not tell it to yet. Since my contents.xhtml file is listed inthe guide, I simply use the Generate HTML table of Contents and it rebuilt my contents.xhtml file.

I would do a save as before rebuilding the html Table of Contents just to be safe, since hand created html TOC can be quite specialized and ornate.

So it all works for me.

Yep, generating the HTML TOC is what worked for me finally.

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.
