Question about deleting in the tags browser

I tend to just delete tags en-mass from the tags browser. I just noticed that there is an option to delete the tag in the virtual library, and delete the tag. I realized that I have been deleting tags from the virtual library.

How can I check if I have actually deleted a tag if I have been deleting them from the virtual library? I can't remember specific tags, but there are more than 10 and they are attached to a lot of books.

Is there a way of restoring deleted VL tags to see if the actual tags have been deleted? Or, have the tags been deleted and I just need to pay better attention next time? Also, will this carry over into created libraries based on the current one?

Deleting from a VL just sets the scope of what the Delete applies to.

If the total usage of a Tag goes to 0 (BooksTagLnk) , the Tag is removed from the Tags Table

AFAIK, there is no way to recover the 'where it had been used' info once it was gone.

This may help == switch to the All Books VL (IIRC you can't not have one), click the Configuration button in the Tag Browser, then select Sort by->Number of books.

The Miscellaneous->Clear the virtual library shortcut will get you to the All Books VL. It defaults to Ctrl+Esc. On Windows 10 (not sure about 7) Ctrl+Esc opens the Start menu, so I changed Clear the virtual library to Ctrl+Alt+↑ (Ctrl+Alt→ and Ctrl+Alt← are Next and Previous VL)

How do you get to sort the tags by number of books? Or are you saying that the tags just have the numbers next to them, but they still run alphabetically?

I found the Virtual Library shortcut in the Shortcuts in Preferences. Spent a bit of time stumbling through that app data folder going through Miscellaneous.

And what are you talking about with the VL "All Books" is that just no library being applied? Is there a way to reset the tags browser to default showing all the books?

And yes, (Ctrl+Esc= Start Menu) So thanks for that heads up and the suggestions, I changed it.

Also, I need to change the Calibre shut down shortcut because I am constantly closing out Calibre when I am not trying to.

Ok, I was just wondering if when I right/click/Delete on a tag in the browser and select erase from Virtual Library if that deleted the tag or just hid it from the browser. You are right that checking out the .db file shows me what is there.

Why don't you just try it - it's a setting with three possible values that can be reset as needed - it won't corrupt your embarrassment of databases or their cornucopia of custom columns, however here's a spoonful :



Which tells me that the library has 3405 books with an EPUB…, 12 books with a ONE…, and 1 book with a LNK

The Manage Tags list has a count column which is sortable, it's the complete list, i.e. not filtered by VL.

If you press Shift+F2 on a Tags cell you'll get the Tags Editor which is also the complete list - you can remove/delete/expunge tags from here.

IMO you should never need open a calibre database with a 3rd party database browser.
