@owl123: good point - compared with eg. the sony 505 the power management of the 1000 is a catastrophy - thinking of additional hardware that makes additional problems that irex can't handle makes my head ake... as i wrote in the irex forum before i don't belive that irex will ever improve the 1000 series so it will work as it should... I'm pretty shure that the hardware itself is faulty and can't be fixed by any update... so: more hardware more problems

After reading your posts, I gotta ask. Do you have some horrible experience with the iRex people that the rest of us don't know about? Did they piss in your Cheerios or eat your baby or something? Seriously, yes I get it, you hate your DR. Sell it. Beat it with a bat. Make out with it, do something. But the device works as advertised even if it isn't perfect.

They optimized wifi on the iLiad without any problems. But I guess exaggeration and bashing are more fun.

I think I moved this thread off topic. Sorry about all that. I do want to comment on the Wifi. Like the Iliad I expect one will be able to turn it off. If it can be used even for a short time each day to pull the full newspaper, download books and on occasion a glance at wikipedia then it is worth having Wifi. Then turn it off and the battery issue goes away. The intent is not to have it running as a companion while reading. It is like the gas speedpass. You don't need it but it is nice to have to save a bit of time and of course there is the convenience. Otherwise tether your reader to the PC and forget about Wifi.

I have come to an executive decision and it is based on my comments earlier in the thread. I really expect the SW to appear after this next firmware upgrade. I think this is the firmware upgrade that turns the reader into the device everyone expected when they made this purchase. If it doesn't then I get the current Digital Reader. If the SW does appear then I'll buy the SW.

I'm just stating the facts. No exaggeration here concerning DR's battery life.

As for the lack of wifi-enabled device due to battery life issues -- this is my guess.

So your comment that it'll only get 30 minutes of battery life with WiFi is not an exaggeration? Can you tell me what factual information that educated guess is based on?

It's based on my experience with other electronic devices.

Take iPod Touch as an example. It can play music for 22 hours while active use of wi-fi gets you about 3-4 hours of battery life.

In the case of DR1000 the battery lasts for 4-5 hours while reading actively (i.e. chaning pages, not staring for hours while the device is in sleep mode). Using similar number relation (22/4 = 5,5 or 22/3 = 7,33) to the one mentioned above you can get a battery life in the range 41 min - 54 min.

Sure these are different technologies and different type of devices. That's why this is just a guess.

Which pretty much makes any direct comparison useless.

Should I define what a word "guess" means?

I'm quite baffled why you keep defending iRex whenever there's a post by an unhappy customer.

I'm sure neither of us thinks that's necessary.

I don't defend them when unhappy customers complain, I just get annoyed with people who post silly nonsense and take cheap shots at iRex.

I can tell you that it doesn't mean the same thing as "facts," which is what you claimed to be stating earlier.

I can't speak for Shaggy in this regard, but I happen to like the DR even including the relatively minor quirks and issues that it has. Yes, it is a new kind of device based on a technology that has only been around for a few years, so there are bugs and glitches along the way. Yet, you and several others continue to complain because basically having device that sits on the cutting edge of new technology involves glitches. I'm sorry, but that's pretty much how technology works.

Perhaps, if you want technology that doesn't have glitches, you take a step back to something a bit more tried and true. Just a thought, but it's one you really ought to consider strongly.

Shaggy: Thank you for your kind remarks regarding my posts.

PhishStyx: Please reread my posts. I stated facts regarding battery life in general, i.e. the device works no more than 5 hours while reading "actively." My guess was why wi-fi enabled DR device hasn't been released yet.

I don't "continue" to complain. This was my first comment about my problems with DR's battery life and it's justified. I didn't get the device for free and as most customers I'd like to get most out of my purchase. Try to understand that.

@owl123: it's senseless to argue with some people - this is not about things working or not - this is about making someone's big things smaller. go to the next porsche driver you see and tell him that his car smells like old shoes (most porsches do) - if you survive you know what i mean

I wrote this while i had to wait 3 minutes for a PDF page turn on my DR1000...
