I actually wonder how they did it. If you are a Windows user you have to know that you also have to add another dot at the end, otherwise Windows Explorer complains about an invalid folder name. Same if you try to modify the name of a directory with a leading dot. And if you use a hidden folder that's already there, then it's probably .kobo which still isn't scanned in the new firmware, is it?
As user of a UNIX style operating system (Linux, OS X, BSD) you probably know that .something means hidden file/folder otherwise you'll wonder whatever happened to all those files or folders that suddenly disappeared over the years...

Ok, found, but this is not evident.
Now, you can set the chapter progress by page number, percent read, time remaining, or off, this meaning you can hide the header.
You can also set the book progress in the same way than the chapter progress, this meaning you can hide the footer.
But in previous firmware versions, you had explicit voices to hide/show the header/footer, for old men as me please insert a readme.txt or whatsnew.txt file...

Just a comment: all the complaints about change of header/footer and scanning of directories beginning by dot should go directly to Kobo, so they see the answer from the customer. It gets nothing if Kobo isn't aware of it. Just saying....

Thanks for the info. I thought it might have been something to do with the patches. I was well aware of the patch for "micthtml" but I didn't remember the one about allowing searches in extra dictionaries. With each successive firmware update, I always reapply the patches mainly by copying my previous choices for the patches without paying too much attention. I definitely won't forget about that particular patch from now on! Thanks again!

Ps: Usually, I wait for the patches to become available before updating the firmware but this time, I couldn't wait because I was so looking forward to try the new page flipping fonction — which by the way I quite liked now that I've tried it.

@davidfor: Yeah, bad news, the Account sign out process simply wipes the .kobo folder, so, yep, not a viable location in my book :/.


Random tidbit: I *assume* macOS resource forks (._*) are ignored, but that doesn't apply to directories ;p (Hey, it was worth a try ;p).

This is indeed going to be a genuine issue w/ the various .Trash* folders used in *nix/macOS land, though...

(And, yeah, the "Library lives in a subfolder" approach was the one taken by Amazon on Kindles: USB storage is @ /mnt/us, Library lives in /mnt/us/documents).

The patches are almost finished. You can find all the working ones so far (almost everything) on GitHub, but don't complain yet it doesn't work or if you don't know how to use it. The official release will come on Friday or Saturday.

It's a lot less brittle and intrusive than a patch or mount tricks. I'll make a POC later and see what I can do with it.

I've never applied an individual patch. I always used the collection of patches, enabling only the patches I need within it.
So, can I use the previous version's collection of patches, simply indicating YES for this particular patch allowing searches in extra dictionaries and NO for all other patches? Is this the way to do it?

PS I just saw the new patch will be officially released in a few days so it is not a pressing issue but I still would like to know for future reference...

Well, in my case... I have a kobopatch standard, I copy the patch from the previous release... and it's touch and go. But, in your case, you would need to enable only this patch... and change the release number (in other case, it won't work).

Already done for the leading dot issue via chat and general feedback (although a 1000 word limit seems a little restrictive...)

I might wait for the official release in two or three days then. I have over two thousand books on the reader and I'm terrified something would go wrong and I'd have to reset it and transfer all my books again. I had to do that a couple of years ago when something went wrong with an update and it took hours and hours to reload all the books— on top of that, I have Calibre converting them on the fly from epub to kepub which adds up to the time it takes. I can live without the extra dictionaries until the week-end me think

Sorry, I prefer to say the things in a clear way. I have the process automated, so for me it's something I do with every FW (I don't usually wait for the official patches)
