Split a 12-cup pot of Caribou home-brewed Lakeshore coffee with my wife this morning. We got up at 5am for thirteen years to feed our old cat Willow. When we had to put her down in November, we really got out of the habit. We are now feeding our new babies at 6am, and that first 6am Saturday-Sunday combo was tough.

It's the price we pay. Fortunately, our old dog is in no hurry to wake up in the morning, though when he DOES, he wants to eat NOW!

That was never a problem when we had cats -- they ate dry food and we simply left it out. They fed themselves in the morning. Of course, if their bowls were empty (the horror!), that meant some serious discussion, led by their chief steward, Priscilla. (Apple-head Siamese.) She'd climb right up the length of me in bed, and then ever so delicately put her paw on my cheek and then just barely extend her claws. The message was unmistakable!

Faux San Pellegrino while I grind and stuff Mexican chorizo.

They have half a cup of dry food out per day, but they also get two 3-oz cans of wet a day. They usually have a tiny bit of kibble left at the end of the 24 hours. But they are tiny and need lots of food to grow.

True, at this age, nutrition is critical. Though I admit, Kitten Chow (or its high-priced equivalent) was pretty much all that ours got. Only Alfie (blue-point Himalayan, and Chief Steward wannabe) ever got wet food, and that was because he was having trouble eating once his kidneys started failing. We gave him sub-cu fluids for a year, and hand fed him until the day he looked at me and said it was time. There wasn't a dry eye in the entire vet's office. We'd all been through so much with him (two abdominal surgeries -- his eyes and mouth were bigger than his intestines), and he was such a sweetie.
