Just download the SAMPLES, people!! That way, ya only buy the book when you have already started reading it. It spreads out the cost quite a bit. That plus, yeah, all the free books.

However, if it is a best-seller, at $9.99, and you know you will want to read it -- sometimes it IS best to buy it now. Prices do go back up after a new book isn't so new, but isn't yet available in paperback or otherwise glutting the market.

So far I've had my K2 for about two weeks and I've only bought one book. I've read more than that but only bought one...

There was the free book promotion that was running at Books On Board - got two there (but only read one) plus I've read two books and one short story from Corey Doctorow... His books are all available for free electronically from his website. Of the 4 free SciFi books you get get from Amazon, I downloaded two of them. So when I finish what I'm on now I've got two more books to read before I need to think about buying more...

I've spent less than $13 on two children's picture books for my 3 year old. I've downloaded lots of freebies (thanks MobileRead!) and I'm still borrowing books from our public library.

My original plan was to exchange the contents of our loose coins jar for an Amazon gift card (we usually get Starbucks cards) and only buy Kindle books with the gift card. But alas, Amazon won't let you buy Kindle books with a gift card. I may still follow through on the concept though.

I think my first real Kindle purchase will be City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. I am so hooked into the Mortal Instruments trilogy that I don't want to wait for my library to purchase it.

Sure they will. Just add the GC code to your account and payment will be taken from that balance until it's used up.

Where do you people find these ideas???

Go to your Amazon account and sign in.

Under "Payment", click on the "add GC to your account, and click"

Enter the number of your GC and click 'okay' or whatever is applicable.

All purchases will now be deducted from your GC first. When that runs out, it will re-convert to your charge card.

Enjoy.

I spend less. I don't buy without sampling and I get plenty of free books and borrow from my library. I know some people like to buy their favorite books that they loved in print for the Kindle. I don't do that. I don't really have the collecting drive. I just buy what I want to read right now. Since getting the full book after reading the sample is so fast, I have no reason to buy without reading it first. This keeps me from buying many books I thought I would like and didn't or books I intend to read but might not.

I've bought quite a few books with gift cards.

Edit:

Oh and I also paid for my DH's Kindle half with a Coinstar certificate and my sister's entirely with certificates from my credit card's rewards program.

I haven't had time to spend money on ebooks - I'm still working my way through all the free ones! Between the great Tor giveaway, the 5 new books from Suvudu, plus the gigantic backlog in the free library from Baen, fantastic authors like Peter Watts and Jeffrey A Carver offering their books for free, I've got enough to keep me going for another couple years ...

Authors: Here's a hint - Only offer your first books (or the first of a series for free). I'll more than happy to pay for the rest!

I feel I'm lucky. I'm a big fan of SciFi and Fantasy. There is just so much free content out there in those genres that is very good, especially from Baen, that I've hardly spent but a few dollars on ebooks since purchasing my Kindle 2, and I already have a couple of hundred to read. I know there will be other books I want to read that will cost more money because I want to continue to read the authors I already like, but I'm in pretty good shape for now. Which is a good thing after spending nearly $400 on the Kindle. At least I'm getting off cheap on the books at the moment. lol...

I have an equal number of free books and bought books on my K2. But I find it all too easy to just click and buy. I am trying to be better... it has been 4 days since my last 1-click.

Do I get a white chip or something for that? ....4 days on the wagon...

I do find it easier to click-n-buy another book by an author I know I like, rather than try out the free things I've already downloaded.

Did you download "Assassin's Apprentice"? Warning -- dangerous book. I'm not specially into SF, but I've now bought the 2nd book in the series and am devouring that too.

Yes, I did. I haven't started reading it yet. I am plowing my way through a couple of the free classics first.

Can't beat a free fantasy book. I am sure I will end up paying for the last two of the trilogy.

I've lately been looking through the bargains and finding the titles that I like a lot, so there is always an option for price concious.
