Now I'm Really Confused!!

Hello, All:

OK - I guess my term "stand alone" wasn't a good one - I'm not familiar with the sigh in/out sequence! Where does one do that? In my tablet? From the Kobo? Does that mean that it can't be done unless I connect the Kobo first to the Internet and hence to Kobo?

Plus, from my reading of your descriptions, it seems like, to me at least, a 'factory reset' followed by a re-sending of the books is a lot easier - and one wouldn't lose any information (I am presuming that 'shelves' = 'collections'?)

In the setting, under "Account", it lists the various account associated with the device. The first one is Kobo and you tap "Sign out".

A factory reset will format the book partition. And, you can do it in a way that completely resets the device back to the out of factory status. This means you need to do the setup and sideload any books you were reading. You will lose everything, including collections.

Sigining out removes Kobo related files from the book partition. It will removes the database (which is where the collections are stored), any configuration, purchased books and their covers, Pocket articles and the Adobe account details. But it doesn't touch the sideloaded. When you sign in again, it will reimport the sideloaded books.

In both cases, the collections, any annotations and reading status for sideloaded books will be lost. The advantage of the sign out/in is that you don't need to re-sideload the books. So, it is faster and a little less painful. And can be done without access to a PC. For both, you can recover the collections the next time you connect the device to calibre.
