Gtrs, I'm no scientist, but as I understand it, the current primary objection to Darwinism is that it does not explain why (without a divine guiding hand) certain developments occurred, such as the eyeball. Darwin's modern opponents believe that at some point there were things which eventually developed into eyeballs, but the theory of evolution does not explain why these half-developed eyeballs got started and continued to develop into things which can see.

Read 'Climbing Mount Improbable' by Richard Dawkins. It goes into this 'problem' in detail. There is no issue with eyes and evolution.

In all seriousness, thanks for the info. I'm going to do a search right now for some pics (not Picts. ha.) of the place!

I'm always a day late and a dollar (or pound) short. I'm afraid that I wouldn't have time to get everything done to get there before the heat wave ended.

Actually 88 degrees is a little too warm for me on the beach. The only saving grace is that beaches in the extreme southeast U.S., at least, have a constant and brisk wind blowing off of the ocean, so the temp gets bearable in the low 80's.

Some biologist or other scientist proposed, about 14 or so years ago, that the eye could be created with something like 27 or 28 separate steps, starting with a light-sensitive spot on an organism. Although he is an expert in many fields, I don't think that it was Dawkins who made (at least, first) the proposal. I think that it was an evolutionary biologist who specialized in ophthalmology.

Yeah, I'd like to read or listen to, if possible, the book that you mentioned--I'll put it on my "want list." But since I am not a scientist, and furthermore Dawkins is brilliant, I couldn't dispute what he said if he was wrong. I might not even understand what he was saying, unless he really brought it "down to my level." If I am to be a believer, I have to look at apologetics from (a) completely different perspectives(s).

It seems to me that the question about the eyeball is WHY it would develop, without a divine guiding hand.

Climbing Mount Improbable is written for the interested layman (as most of his books are). There doesn't seem to be an audiobook of it, but there is one of his The Blind Watchmaker, which also touches on it.

Brian Greene's Fabric of the Cosmos was in today's BookBub email at $2.99.

Greene is by far the best video presenter on physics topics IMO - I've watched the excellent 4-part TV version of FOTC twice. I'm hoping the book will go into more detail.

Yes, Greene does an outstanding job of simplifying an extremely complex subject. Neil Degrasse Tyson does good, too, but overall not as well as Greene, IMHO.

I am not familiar with what goes into television show production, but both of those guys may have writers/editors knowledgeable in the field(s), who provide a lot of help, mainly in making things simple, Simple, SIMPLE, and also determining the relative importance of different topics, so as to know what information to include and what information to exclude.

Oh, I meant to say, also, that the copyright of the book appears to be 2007, making it long in the tooth for such a subject in which knowledge changes so quickly.

I think that two of the most common answers to the "why" question are 1) the "natural selection" views of Charles Darwin, and 2) helpful mutations.

That's true, but most recent progress has reinforced mainstream theories that have been around for decades like relativity and quantum mechanics, e.g. LIGO's detection of gravitational waves. Many recent advancements have been in the technology needed to detect and measure phenomena predicted by those theories.

Hopefully there will be major new discoveries about the early universe when the Webb telescope is deployed in 2021...
