People lie about a lot of things, and "reading" is just another item of minutiae around which the question could be asked, with, I suspect, little difference in statistical result. People lie. Well, not me, I don't lie.

Cheers,

I think that it is more a case of people being too embarrassed to admit that they haven't read some of the classics.

Such people could do worse than to order this book by Pierre Bayard:

How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read

The second headmistress at my primary school had a last name very similar to that, although I can't remember now exactly what it was. I do remember the whole class (and presumably the whole school) being coached in how to say it before she started.

OMG! You mean I slogged through War and Peace while everyone else was lying about reading it?

Thats as bad as my golf handicap: honesty!

1984 is one of my favourites to be honest, read it twice. However I do lie when I say I've read Tolstoy, I read like 50 pages of War and Peace, bored the hell out of me!

I can say I've read Tolstoy without lying.

Nikolai, that is, not Leo
